High Calcium Levels
My dr hasn't mentioned checking PTH levels yet, but I'm getting some test resutls back today, so I am going ot ask him about it. I've been googling (if there is such a word!!!), and to be honest have the symptoms of something to do with the Parathyroid gland.
How did you know you had elevated levels - was it discovered from a routine check? As far as I know I am not suffering from osteoporosis - can you get that from raised levels as well as low levels?

Since I've had bone loss for years (osteopenia), my doc routinely check my PTH. The parathyroid glands (4) job is to maintain calcium levels in the blood. When things go whacky, they can pull calcium from your bones which will usually give you an elevated blood calcium. It can be caused by a small growth or hyperplasia of 1 or more of the glands.
In my case, while my PTH has been elevated, my serum calcium has been normal. But I also have bone loss, now osteoporosis. With the malabsorbtion, I always have wondered if my calcium stays normal because I don't absorb enough and the PTH is just bringing it up to normal by taking it from my bones. I went to Mayo for a diagnosis and it came back with 4 gland hyperplasia. Which means they have no idea. My last PTH, however, was back in the normal range. I go next week for a bone density so we'll see how things are.
If you haven't had a bone density, you need to have one done, at least for a baseline.
