Charlie Horse feeling in the stomach

Just ran across this after I googled abdominal charlie horse. I've recently been getting these every few weeks. I'm almost 4 years post abdominal surgery due to kidney cancer and large 10 lb abdominal mass being removed. I had never even heard of an abdominal charlie horse before. Hope you've found some relief. I'm trying to drink more fluids in hope that it helps.

Has anyone figured out what this is yet? I'm currently in the process of getting rny and this just terrifies me and almost makes me not want it anymore.

I have been having the same problem. I had the gastric bypass in 2007. I decided to Google twisting, constricting spasm, Charlie horse abdomen pain because I need answers and landed here. I can recall having these episodes years before even having my gastric bypass surgery as far back as the 1990s. Recently they are becoming more and more intense and come on a daily basis. It gets so bad I start to sweat and feel like Im going to pass out from the pain and the tightening. It feels like my intestines are twisting and I can literally see them moving and my stomach on the right side right under my rib cage become hard as a rock. Before I would just stretch my self backwards and the ball would sort of roll back in place and disappeared, it would only happened when I would bend forward. But now that maneuver doesn't work. I try pressing on the bulge, pulling my stomach out as far (sort of like if making it bloated) as I can and nothing. I just have to try and stand stretched straight, literally looking up towards the ceiling and wait it out. I get it when I bend, while I'm sitting at work, as I am about to wipe myself on the toilet, there's no 1 thing I can now pin point to say why this occurs. I have made an apt with an Gastro internal doctor to see if he has any idea what is causing this. This is the most painful thing I have experienced apart from child birth. I hope someone comes up with a solution because it has been happening to me even while I'm driving and I literally felt I was going to have an accident. Thanks for reading.

I was trying to post my own..sorry, I'm new to this...I googled Charley Horse in stomach also because for the past 6months I have been having severe pain..It first started when I was in a bent down position It was the worse pain..I thought it was my appendix, I could barely get up and I tried walking it off, thought I was ok then bent down again and the pain continued...I had to drive home in pain for an hour and stop several times...I thought that was weird so I chalked it up to some real bad gas..took some gas ex and felt ok but really sore in the stomach for the next several days. about 3ms later I had a full on attack, I did have a pain killer that day and it was hot outside and I was bending alot doing things for a yardsale...I started to feel sick with a migrane, then I sat down with a towel on my head and bowl and vomited...had to jump up because the vomiting triggered the most horrible attack all over my stomach. My sister called the ambulance and they told me I had a cyst on my ovary and it would need further testing. They intially thought it would need surgery then after further testing decided to put me on birth control...I had several tests...I argued with my doctor because I said there is no way that could be causing me so much pain...and I felt it was coming from somewhere else. What am I suppose to just wait till I'm in excrusciating pain and it happens again...I don't want it to happen again. I'm thinking of removing that ovary just as a precaution. The pain generally was on my right side, well lately it has moved to my left side also and almost anytime I bend over now I start getting it...I'm wondering if it is something with my colon or intestine..I'll be going back to a different doctor for answers...I have never had by-pass surgery but i'm just heavy and I do think my weight has something to do with it.

Hi there,

New to the site and curious if anyone has had any breakthroughs on the horrible 'charlie horse' type pain in the abdomen?

I had RnY 2.5 years ago. I've maintained a weight loss of 110+ lbs and have had a multitude of surgeries following RnY. (Appendix, gallbladder, hernia (twice)). However, for over the last year when I bend or engage my abdominal muscles I get this paralyzing pain that bulges out about 2" above my belly button and about an inch or two to the left. The bulge (twisting, feels like someone is gripping my interiors) lasts anywhere between 1 min to 5 min or longer.

My gastric dr has had me do CT scans, upper GI's, X-rays, exploratory surgery and nothing has been found at the place this happens to me. I'm now going to be scheduled for a barium enema and if that shows nothing a colonoscopy.

I attempted to show my dr this site, sharing that others experience the same issues but haven't found resolution or at least from what I've read.

If anyone has any feedback etc. I'm desperate to hear it, please share!

Thank you!

I'm noticing a trend. This Charlie horse like pain near belly button comes when I'm sitting leaning over or tying my shoes. It's so severe...like when you get them in your calves during sleep. It's sharp, and then you straighten up and it stops but the skin is still painful to the touch for a day or two after.

It is NOT gas or heartburn. I do not smoke. I haven't had the weight loss surgery yet.

BUT...the one common denominator I've noticed with many posts is that we have all had some type of surgery in the stomach area. C-section or tummy tucks or gallbladder surgery or hernia surgery etc. Whatever it is...it appears to be related to abdominal surgery AND doctors don't know what the hell it is. I think that mesh theory is a good one. Anyone know any more than this?

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! I have had this type.pain for so long. I have tried to get doctors to understand what I am trying to tell them, I am almost sure this is related to the very invasive Gastroplasty I had in 2001.  I noticed my episodes really started happening after having a ton of MRi's and Xrays for non related problems.

My pain starts right at the tip of the.left rib cage. If I.bend over, even in the slightest, I get the worst pain in that area and only in that area that can only be explained as feeling like a Charlie horse in my leg.  If I stand up the intensity immediately fades, but if I try to lie down to get comfortable O start feeling as though my ribs front and back need to pop, like something under my ribs is swelling.   I can literally feel knots in this area, but doctors say they feel nothing.  I have also had my gallbladder removed, 2 csections, and a full hysterectomy. I keep joking with my doctor and telling him they left something in me - it is funny, but not funny!  If I reach down and kind of put my fingers under my ribs it feels.like I can breath and a boulder has been lifted from me.  The docs have ordered MRI's, Xrays, ans sonograms, but they have found nothing! I don't.know if I can take this.much longer!

Everyone look up stomach paralysis and vagus nerve (separately). It may be informative.

I had WLS in 2012 and for the last 2 years or so whenever I bend or otherwise squish my stomach muscles into an odd shape I get an intense "charlie horse" in my stomach muscles. Like, I feel like my intestines are knotting and twisting and I have to hold real still and breath deeply until it passes. It is SO intense. I am always scared I will pass out. I also had a C-section in 1995. I wonder if it has to do with cutting the stomach muscles? I've not seen a doctor about it. Every time I go to the doctor, they are pretty much useless and I didn't want to spend the money to get a shoulder shrug and tell me to lose weight.

I have the exact thing happen nearly every day to me. Huge Charlie Horse cramps in my stomach area. I had my gallbladder removed over 15 years ago, had gastric sleeve in 2012, then a tummy tuck in 2017. My plastic surgeon did mention to me during the tummy tuck he noticed I was not lined up properly so he had to make me even, said my belly button wasn't aligned with my center of my pelvis. He wouldn't go into much detail. Always remember that comment by him. I have seen my regular family doctor who said she would like me to go on muscle relaxers before she sent me out for CT and all that other stuff. I haven't taken the muscle relaxer much. I did at first and noticed a bit of improvement but don't care for it much. So stop taking now. I need answers. Please the pain is one Charlie horse after another over and over in. Y stomach to the left side right near my bellybutton. Can't even move when this happens. I can only apply pressure with my fist, after it happens I have to not make any movement with my arms, like pick anything up or bam!!!starts again. Dealt with this for 4 years now. I get it when I bend over to pull my pants up when using restroom or move or reach in a way bending over. It's so weird. I have gotten good at breathing my way through the Charlie horses. Any answers please.
