Charlie Horse feeling in the stomach

I realize these are all older posts but I was too searching for charlie jorse in abdomen, and was led to this site.  I had the RNY in Dec '06.  Have the muscle spasms in my belly to the right, I also have a sharp pain like something is poking me from the inside.  The other problem I have had since the surgery is pain when "stuff" is moving through my colon.  Pain so bad during the spasms and the moving through that I think  I might die.  Any suggestions?  I have been told I am extremely anemic and not sure what they will do for me if anything.  Finall have a doctors appointment tomorrow to find out what is so extremely low and concerning to them.  I will have to wait and see.

Ok back to where I was a few years ago. Apparently the exploratory surgery and removal of scar tissue on my liver didn't solve all the pain. I am scheduled for an endoscopy this Wednesday with a local GI doctor not connected with my surgeon. I have been having burning pain and nausea along with the charley horses near my belly button. The GI doctor started me on Carafate for an ulcer that he suspects and will examine this Wednesday. Also he said the charley horse could be adhesions in my intestines so when food moves through, the intestines kink up. He said there is some medication I could take to relax the intestines but I don't get how the intestines are upper right of my bellybutton, i know they reattatched them to the pouch but I can't see how they are that high. The charley horses are becoming the life of me, I had an awful attack when I was outside bending over planting..it is happening more and more but nobody seems to know the real cause. I never had these attacks before surgery. I am constantly bending over and moving around as my job as a CNA and I am always afraid of having these attacks at work.

I just read through this entire thread and I don't know if you read Dana's post from your original posting but that sounds a lot like what could be happening.  I know I get that when I bend over too far, its happened a few times in the last few years and I am sure it is that same sort of hernia that she describes.  Its not debilitating to me, it only happens when I bend deeply but when I do and get the pain it is super intense, then cramps up and after a while starts to relax over the course of the next day or two.

Good Luck.

I have just read thru this entire thread - same symptoms as described and I have had this pain for years

This is what fixed me up....papaya enzyme! I chew three tabs - take a few sips of water....and the spasm releases.....

This pain wakens me in the middle of the night etc....its terrible...now I carry papaya enzyme with me always....the first sign of pain I start chewing and sipping....seriously - this works for me

Hi, I am new to this site. I had surgery about 10 yrs ago. I have been complaining about the same pain for almost 1 yr.  I have my gallbladder and have been advised I have stones. They want to remove it. I've told them the pain I get is like a charlie horse in my stomach. Its in my upper right side. If I bend to the left , I get the pain.I don't get the pain from eating or not eating. It only happens if I move a certain way.  When I was in the office I told him if I extend my belly , I wanted him to feel a certain part of my stomach. I had him feel like a little knot. When he pushed on it , I must have seen a million stars.  They just look a me like I'm nuts. I just had a CT the other day and went to DR today for the results. He thought I may have a Hernia, To his surprise he showed me my CT and it was ALL NORMAL. He is ordering a CCK test on the Gallbladder. I've been reading online about SOD Spasm. It a circular muscular tissue at the end of the Gallbladder. Or something like that. Anyone heard about that , It stands for Sphincler Of Oddi Dysfunction. Hope to talk to you guys soon.....

I stumbled on this string after googling "charlie horse in stomache" . I am 47 years of age now and have regularly endured muscle spasming cramps since i was about 16 which could be described such as been listed here by several previous posts. Over the years I have met several people that suffer from these types of cramps in their arms and legs, as do I, but have never actually communicated with anyone who has experienced  this tightenning ball of muscle in the adomen that always seems to happen at the most unexpected moment while bending , lifting , twisting or otherwise exerting the stomache muscle even if it is only  to some small, slight, almost insignificant degree. I like many other posters here have brought this to the attention of my family doctor who showed minimal interest and did not offer any straight conclusions. The first time I experienced this I was a very young man doing deep knee bends with bar bells on my shoulders when a ball of muscle pretty much the size of 1 segment of a well burried six pack of a not so ripped tummy suddenly popped right out of my stumache. my immediate reaction was in fear thinking I ruptured something, but after dropping the weights I quickly found that like other charlie horses in my legs and arms I could relax the muscle and eleviate the strain by straightenning out my back and applying pressure to the bulging muscle. I found that any bending immediately after would only reagrivate the muscle and I would have to lay straight or even arc my back to keep the muscles stretched out as much as possible until the bulging tense muscle became fully relaxed and settled down. Over the years I have gained conciderabe weight, enough so that I cant actually visibly see the bulge when ever the charlie horse type strain reoccures but  i have found that applying pressure to the spot and arcing my back for as long as need be still alleviates the problem. After getting my drivers licence I began fearing what might happen if it occurred while I was driving and sure enough enevitably it did. All I can say about that is if you suffer from this type of cramping and it happens to you apply pressure immediately and pull off the road only if you feel  can do so safely other wise just  take your foot from the gas and come to a s gentle a stop as you can, put the car in park and activate your 4ways till it passes. For me in the end it turned out not to be quite as scary of an experience as I immagined it. but i did have yet another potentially fatal experience which I didnt think about before hand, in the deep end of a swimming pool. Fortunately I am able to do a reasonable immitation of a back float otherwise the lifeguard might have had to fish me off the bottom and pump water out of my lungs. So naturally if your reading this you might want to concider this and take necessary percautions before swimming.  Other than this I have never been able to get right down to the root cause or what i might be able to do to completely eliminate this situation in the future. perhaps a better diet or regular stretching and or regulated exercise program I dont know but I think personally I would rather just deal with it just as I have all my life than go through exploritory surgery. I just dont thik I have the "stomache" for it. lol

Tammy,

I have been getting the same feeling on the right side of my stomach too. With mine it seems to start down by my belly button and knots then rolls up under my rib cage and right breast. The pain is very intense. I have to rub it just so I can breathe again. I went to my Dr. he told me that my liver is enlarged. We don't know if that is the problem or not. I would have to go in for a sonogram just to be sure.
I'm going on 2 days now with it hurting this bad. But have had several episodes before this.

Hi Tammy,

I am 4 weeks post op on my  lap band removal and having the Vertical Sleeve surgery and I am having the same type of pain. The pain would start down by my belly button and knots then rolls up under my rib cage and right breast.  I've been to the ER twice and the CT scan and X ray comes back normal. I'm going to schedule an appointment with my PCP DR to get a better response of what's going on with myself.   Just wanted to know if you have the results from the Sonogram.

I have had these pains too!! I am currently going through the test and whatnot. I was told when I had my first few it was just my body trying to "repair" itself from my csection I just had. It was my muscles trying to get back to normal. Well now pushing 300lbs, I had one just the other day. My baby is now 2. I was wiping my bottom and twisted wrong and felt the sharp pain.. thought I'm not gonna let that happen again, so went to front to "clean". and there was this pressure then pop feeling. I thought my guts fell out! I had a knot about the size of a soccer ball right under my right rib cage. IT WAS SOO PAINFUL! and I messaged it, rotated my body.. stood up, sat down tried to get on my hands and knees.. NOTHING would stop the pain. I was home with my 2, a friends 2 year old, and my 6 year old. My pants were on the floor in the bathroom. I grabbed a towel, because I couldn't bend of to pick up my pants, and stumbled to my room. I tried laying on my stomach and it still hurt. When I went to try to roll to my back it felt like I was ripping my organs out of my stomach more. it even started to pull towards my back by my kidneys. This totally time of this episode lasted about 45 minutes!! I felt like I was going to puke foam, I was very weak and dizzy.  I was just seconds from calling 911.. I had it dialed incase I passed out. Hopefully my oldest could call. My doctor is baffled. :( I just DON"T want this to ever happen again.

wow, I had no idea this was so common....i googled charlie horse in abdomen and here I am.  I am roux-n-y gastric bypass in 2003.  No real problems and good results with weight loss.  Start weight 300 lowest 155 (looked like I was sick) best weight 175, current weight 199 (can't put 200).  I have been having the excruciating spasms in different parts of my abdomen but I have had several abdominal surgeries (2 c-sections, tubal ligation, gastric bypass, kidney surgery, panniculectomy)  I have never mentioned this to the doctors cuz i just always have too many other things to ask about with my other chronic health problems.  I also get gripping charlie horse spasms in any body part, arm, foot, leg, hand, to the point of curling on it's own.  I am on chronic muscle relaxers and pain pills so why are my muscles cramping.  I have fibromyalgia so i guess i always thought it was part of that.

Maybe there is something that can be done.  Thanks everyone for sharing!
