Weight Gain After RNY
Hi, I had my surgery Sept 2003. One year after surgery, I lost a total of 140LBS. Then I had a Tummy Tuck done in 2006. I was so happy with all that I did and proud of myself also. I was having a ball enjoying my NEW life.
Then it happened before I knew it some weight started to come back. In total five years later, I have gained a total of about 30LBS back. You might not think it sounds like a lot but it is to me. It seems like it settled in different areas on my such as my back and my thighs. Which by the way I hate hate hate. I always have hated them and they never really seemed to disappear on me either. So now, with the weight gain they even stick out more when I wear my jeans.
The reason for this post is I was wondering if there is anyone else out there that has gained some weight back after being years out.
I know that there are things that I shouldn't be doing such as grazing. I love munching on crunchy things. I always have since the surgery. Pretzels go down so easily. I still dump if I were to eat too much sugar, which I am grateful that I still get that. Keeps me away from certain foods. However, at the same time I can eat two to three cookies and not have a problem. Especially if I eat two to three and wait a little while and then eat them again.
All my blood work is fine. I eat a good breakfast every morning. Then comes lunchtime and to be honest that is when my picking on things start. See I know the problems and I am working on them. What I was wondering is has anyone else gained any weight and if so how much and what are you doing to help yourself.
Oh yeah I do attended my monthly support group meetings and my doctor has a message board that I run for him. I honestly think that doing the two of those things really is what has stopped me from gaining more then what I have.
So, is there anyone else out there gaining?

You are definitely not alone. Check out this thread from a couple a days ago.

There's plenty of support on this board and success stories. The tool still works. Do you remember how we used to go on a diet, lose weight and then gain back that weight and more. At least now we haven't gained back even more than we originally lost. Congrats on maintaining 110 lbs. which is quite an accomplishment!
Don't give up the fight... it's a lifelong journey.
Hugs!

Regina-I may be in a worse boat than you. I had a rny 2 years ago. I lost 110 lbs of my weight beforehand and gained weight to have surgery. I didn't actually try to gain weight I just gave up tryting to keep it off and when I got back to 195 I went to see a surgeon. I relost the 30ish pounds but I stillI can't get below a bmi of 28. On my story I posted my plan b diet. That is as little food as I can eat for an extended period of time. If I can eat this you can too. You may already be eating less than that and may have a bmi of less then 28. If that is the case this really won't help you. I just am grateful that my bmi is 28 rather than 49. good luck, Daisy

Hi there. I just saw your post and I wanted to let you know that I'm in the same boat as you. I had my surgery in Sept. of 2003 as well. I went from 332 to 166 then crept up to about 178. At that point, I got pregnant. I only gained 12 pounds during my pregnancy and after I had my daughter, weight almost literally fell off. I was down to 158 in no time. A few months later, something shifted and I haven't been able to stop gaining since then. I'm up to about 206 now and I feel so terrible about myself. I know that I have crept back into some old bad habits, but even when I try to be really "good," weight doesn't come back off. I was addicted to regular pepsi and was drinking about 6 to 8 cans per day. I gave that up two months ago and I still haven't loss any weight. I am so discouraged at this point. You are not alone.

I would like to say thank you to all that has replied to my post.
All the things that were said were so true. I have tried to cut back on calories and was doing pretty good that’s how I lost 15 of the 30 I gained. I am going to start today again. Not tomorrow or the first of the year TODAY! I don't want to gain anymore and I really don't want to end up having surgery again even though I would do it again in a heartbeat. I just feel that at the point that I am at that I can get back into control of myself. Thanks for all the encouragement that you have given me.
I looked over that diet plan that was told to me and to be honest I don't think I can do that. I am going to email my Nutritionist again today and see what she thinks of that. Everyone who has had the RNY needs to take in a certain amount of protein.
Another thing that I am doing is working with my surgeon who preformed the surgery and the nutritionist and a few members from our support group to send out an email to everyone in our group that might have gained weight. It is not that uncommon from what I have been hearing and reading here. Together with them, we are going to have a special meeting, which at that time we hope to help one another get back on track and use that tool that was given to us again the correct way.
Again, thank you and I will be around here more often. I have forgotten how wonderful this place is.

Hi Regina,
Good luck on losing those 30 pds, you can do it, I know you can!
Are you exercising? If not, start today. Keep eating food, you don't want to starve your body. Our body needs protein to survive and get your carbs from fresh fruits/veggies. Try to stay away from those evil pretzels. Try a pickle instead. I'm glad your involved in a support group. Be honest with yourself, never play games because in the end you pay for it with added weight. Keep posting you will get a lot of support here.
I'm at goal but I exercise every day. I chose it as my transfer addiction. I've been sick with a nasty cold or virus, went to the doctor. Just taking it easy but today I'm heading back to the gym for my weight lifting class.

Hi Regina,
This calendar year has been so difficult for me... I have gained 20lbs and add the other 10lbs since my lowest weight and I'm right there with you at 30lbs... I'm miserable... I've started back to the gym and I'm really focusing on protein and complex carbs... So far tho the scale hasn't budged... UGH!!!!
Anyway, I just wanted you to know that you are not alone out there in the fight to get off the re-gain!
Kristina =)

hello!!!!!!!! i am having the same issues!!! im also 5 years out and i have gained back 40LBS!!! iam soooo distraught and angry this happened. i know i only have myself to blame but i wish they told me it was going to stay difficult to remain thin i injured my back earlier this yr and its difficult to exercise. im considering diet pills!!! have you heard of anyone doin that??
I'm 8 years out, and have gained back 40 pounds. I've always been up and down the same 10-15 pounds, but now it's not going away again. I had my extended TT done last August, and have gained 20 or so since then.
I know I have swelling (to the point of what I think is extensive, sometimes), but the fat that has come back is in my back and legs. I can' t chalk it all up to swelling anymore. I am SICK about it. I haven't been over 200 pounds in 7 years, swore I would never be again, and here I am. 203 as of this morning.
I've read that the body can sometimes find ways around the new physiology, and go back to where it is "programmed" to be with certain people. I'm wondering if that has some truth to it.
I know I need to totally overhaul my eating to see where the problem is, and I think I'm going to give that 5 day Pouch thing a good whirl. I'm thinking I'll start with a good cleanse, and see what happens.
I just got freaked out that it has happened so quickly, and has not stopped!
It seems a lot harder to lose the second time around.
