Anemia no iron blood transfusion
Hello All,
I am 23 months out and after a week of daily IV iron with no difference in my labs I had my first blood transfusion today because of anemia and no iron. My feritin levels was below 1. And I am not absorbing iron at all. I was wondering if anyone knows if this something I am going to have to battle forever or if once my levels get back to normal will they stay that way for how long, the nurse today said my levels may come up a couple points and I will feel a little better but it wouldn't last long...
. I am to the point where I cannot function to work. My Hemo Dr say part of the anemia may be due to an inherited genetic disorder that he will confront after he gets my levels back to a safe normal range.
My question is are there any out there 5,10,15 yrs out dealing with this and does any one know about possibly getting social security disability from this? I work a high stress sales job and as long as I meet my monthly goals I get to keep my wonderful job and medical insurance. I have a gut feeling this is going to be an ongoing problem because I have this genetic anamia that is really aggravated now because I don't absorb iron sence having wls. If I can't work they won't keep me and there goes the insurance. I am almost out of sick days.

How is your thyroid? Hypothyroidism can cause low ferritin.
Are you on thyroxine? This can cause lowered body temperature which can cause you to make less red blood cells.
How is your hemoglobin (Hb)? How is your mean corpuscular volume (MCV)? If your Hb and MCV are both normal, you may just be iron depeleted as opposed to iron deficient. I know that sounds like the same thing, but it's really not exactly the same.
Are you symptomatic?
Are you still menstruating?
Wendy,
Hb is 24 and MCV was very low too I don't remember what it was . I am symptomatic and still menstruating. Thyroid is good. I have no strength at all. Hopefully that transfusion will kick in today. I don't know how long it will last or if I will have to keep getthing this done. Was looking for some history of anyone that has went through this stuff..
Thanks Tammy

Well, the good news is it will definately get better when you STOP menstruating. (Mine did. I had an endometrial ablation for other female problems, so I don't have periods anymore.)
I had iron deficiency almost immediately post-op. There are two relatively new iron treatments available. They prescribe them to pregnant women a lot because they don't have the constipation side effects that other iron supplements do. They are Tandem and Repliva. I tried both. I preferred Tandem.
It DID work to get my iron back up there almost immediately and I didn't have to have the IV.

I am not an expert nor do I know a lot about it but getting social security is very very hard. I am going on about a year and a half of waiting. I have been granted a hearing in front of a judge to appeal my denials but that sometimes takes 6+ months (which should be about the first of 2009) I applied in 2007. I also have both physical and mental disabilities now from my RNY 5 yrs ago plus severe arthritis in both knees. I have a few doctors backing it up and I was still denied. I can not feel my legs and am limited in the amount I can walk. I also have a lot of memory loss that affects me day to day.
I am telling you this just to give you some insight into how hard it is to get SSDI. It is a long hard process. My family applied for me when I was in a care facility having to learn how to take care of myself again. I was in a wheelchair and trying to learn how to use a walker and how to transfer to a toilet. I was denied. If this is something that you feel strongly about I would consult with a lawyer. Most people are denied the first time.
Good luck!

Hi Tonya,
sounds like you have really been through it! I know it will be a fight but if we can't work what are we to do to live? Good luck in your hearing. Do you have an attorney? I haven't lost my job as of yet but I'm sure as soon as I use all my sick and personal days they will be looking to cut me. There is no way I can work in this condition. Thanks for the advise
