Severe Gas Pain...What is this?

I'm almost four years out of RNY and just recently, in the last six weeks, I'll get pain around my ovaries, feeling like there is a beach ball in my stomach.  I'm eating primarily protein, taking my vitamins, exercising 5x per week, and drinking only water or SF Kool Aid.  I even cut out coffee thinking this was the cause. I had my yearly woman's exam and all was well so I know it's not cysts or anything "female".

Yesterday I felt great until about 8:30pm when I had a small scoop of a sugar free apple crisp that I made earlier in the day.  The pain was excruciating and I still felt the remnants this morning.  On Friday, after eating a small box of Dots candy (I know, a no-no), I felt it immediately. I attributed it to the sugar and vowed to remain SF yesterday.  I did--and still had the pain.  This has been going on for the last 2 weeks.  Prior to that I had an episode (September) that lasted about 2 weeks, but I took Prilosec and cut out sugar and that seemed to do it...until it recently came back.

I had attributed the early experience to stress, diet...but now I can't nail down the cause.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?  I'm at my lowest weight since my surgery, overall feeling fit...I can't figure it out?  Could it be an ulcer?  gallbladder?  I'm really getting scared.  Any suggestions for alleviating this would be appreciated!

Hi Christy. I experience this from eating sugar or sugar substitutes too, but not sure that's the problem here. If its extremely uncomfortable and causing you to worry, make an appt with your dr to try to pinpoint the true cause. Sorry I don't have any info for you, but I do feel your pain!!!!!!

I started having gas issues at about 3.5 years out, and they really thought it could've been gallbladder related.  I had all kinds of tests run... colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound... just to make sure everything was okay.  My gastro doc finally decided that it was bacterial overgrowth.  Since we have less stomach acid production, the bad bacteria can get out of hand and produce a lot of painful gas.  He put me on Xifaxan, which is actually what they give you for traveler's diarrhea and whatnot.  Totally helped.  Thankfully, that seemed to just be a phase, and I'm off the meds.  You do want to rule out gallbladder problems and celiac disease, though, so I would recommend going to a gastroenterologist.

Please go see your doctor!

It could be any of the things you listed or even a blockage.

Best to check it out to be safe! Hope you feel better soon.
