Need some feedback please
I'm almost 18 months out from VSG. For the first 6 months post op, I felt no hunger. I had to make myself eat and I only ate to live and because I had to. At 6 months, some hunger returned, but it was just enough to remind me to eat. I still only feel hunger when it's time to eat. I eat 6 planned small meals a day (it's not grazing because they are planned and healthy). I'm still not able to eat enough to keep me full till a next meal if I only ate 3 times a day. Plus they say eating several small portions a day helps raise your metabolism.
There are times I feel like snacking on junk (like chips or something), but it's in my head. The surgery fixed my stomach, not my head. I went from wearing a size 22 pants and 3X shirt, to a size 4 pants (sometimes 2) and small shirt (sometimes XS). I love everything about it. I do have to watch myself and make sure I don't skip a meal (yes, I do sometimes forget to eat still), because it's still really easy for me to lose weight. I'm not at all under weight, but I don't want to weigh any less than I do now, so I do watch out for that. Let me know if you have any specific questions I might be able to answer.
Laya, I would still encourage you to post on the VSG forum, perhaps with something like "Feedback from long-term VSGers" in the subject line. There are quite a lot of us around between one and three years out and we try to check in on the main VSG board pretty regularly.
As for me, I am a year out. My ticker shows two more pounds to goal because I reached my first goal - normal BMI - somewhere around 9-10 months, and then set a new goal of 149, just for the hell of it. I should probably just say I am at goal, because even if I never lose another pound, I will be happy.
What is life like after the VSG? Short answer - great. I eat whatever I want, but in small quantities and following the "protein first" rule (otherwise I don't count carbs or anything like that). My health has improved immeasurably and life is quite simply a lot more fun at a size 8 than it was at a size 24.
Anyway, as I said, post on the VSG board and you are sure to get more responses from long-term folks.
Best of luck with your decision!
