Need some feedback please
I did read what the purpose of the WLS Grads Forum is but I think this would be the best place to post this question. I have read almost all of the WLS Grads postings and noticed that the majority of folks on this forum are RNY grads. My surgery date is November 14 and my surgeon, who would like to perform a Lap RNY on me may not be able to because of some of my health issues including the amount of weight in my middle section. The alternate choice would be VSG.
Are there any VSG Grads that wouldn't mind sharing what it is like for them after a couple of years post-op? Even though I know that VSG has only been around for about 10 years, there is not much Grad information out there.
Both RNY and VSG are excellent procedures and with either tool I will start a new chapter in my life. I would just like to gather as much information before my surgery as possible on VSG. The VSG Forum is great but most people aren't that far out post-op to be asked this question.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Laya,
I am a VSG person and I am 15 months out. I would highly recommend the VSG surgery because there is no re-routing of your intestines or as I call it your plumbing. I had surgery August 16, 2007 and I have lost 103 pounds. I had VSG surgery in August then on Oct. 31 of 2007 I fell and tore my achillies tendon in my right leg, so on Nov. 6, 2007, I had another major surgery. Even with that set back (the Achillies surgery) I was able to still loose weight. Now I am a slow looser but I am still very pleased with my progress.
I live in Ohio and am a self pay, so I went to Michigan to have my surgery. I had absolutely no problems. I was a type II diabetic and came out of the hospital on absolutely no medication. I was only in the hospital 24 hours, I was walking the halls of the hospital after surgery in about 3 hours. I had very little pain, no issues drinking water. I personally think it was the best choice for me.
I hope my rambling has helped, if you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Karen

Hi Laya,
I'm a little over 18 mths out, a revision (I had a stomach stapeling in the early 1980's) I'm now RNY open incision.
Yes there is a "honeymoon period" for all weight loss surgeries. During this honeymoon period you should concentrate on making good food choices, learning to eat healthy and following the bariatric rules.
I'm still losing, I'm in control of my wieght loss. Because I wasn't a "virgin" WLS my weight came off slowly but I also exercise big time. For me that means walking Mon thru Fri at work during my lunchtime with my friend for 3 miles. I also do water aerobics, spin class and weight lifting class. You have to make a life style change, this is not a diet.
People that don't make the life style change have a tendency to go back to "dieting" and I didn't do this surgery to be dieting for the rest of my life.
2 people have had VSG's in one of my support groups. They are doing great. My BF had the lapband and she is doing wonderful.
What ever choice you make, you can make it work.
You should also check out the DS forum. The VSG can be a revision to DS if necessary.
Good luck and keep posting.

Laya,
To some extent I have a tendency to feel hungrier but not that bad. I find I have to really limit my carbs. If I eat carbs I get hungrier. I follow mostly the "Adkins" type diet. I don't want to say the work diet, I have really talked myself into the idea this is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change. There is supposed to be a "honeymoon" period with the VSG, 6-9 months, but I really did not even pay attention to that. Is your RNY surgery that you are considering being done by laproscopy ? My VSG was done by laproscopy.

Karen,
The surgeon wants to perform RNY but if he feels it is not safe, it will be VSG. Both would be done laparoscopically. Open was not an option. I'm guessing it was not an option because the amount of years I have had diabetes, etc. I'm leaning toward VSG. My pre-op is on Friday so I will hopefully get to talk to the surgeon and discuss it a bit further.

Laya,
Yesterday afternoon I spoke with a friend of mine, her daughter in law had the RNY in June, she too was diabetic and other health issues. The daughter in law is having a real bad time with vitamin deficiency, which I don't have with the VSG. She has been back in the hospital 2 or 3 times. Good luck with your pre-op and make a list of questions to ask your surgeon. Keep me posted.

That's interesting Karen. I'm sorry your friend's daughter is having such difficulties. There has been many articles recently on Vitamin D deficiency. My doctor had D level checked about 6 months before the reports came out. It turned out I was extremely D deficiant and was put on a high dosage of D which brought it up to almost near normal. I'm now on 2,000iu per day and am not sure what my levels are now. That was my concern with the malabsorption factor with RNY. I will make sure to bring this up on Friday at my pre-op visit. I'll add it to my list.
Thanks.
