If u had to do it over again...
I absolutely would do it again.
I had RNY for a number of reasons, but specifically because I was diabetic and have hemochromatosis. It has resolved both. My quality of life has increased exponentially, as has my overall general health.
My only regret is not having done it sooner.

P.S. My husband will be having RNY in December and I'm behind him 100 percent.

If someone came into my room and said, you have to have RNY again, I'd say LET'S GO!!
I have had it, my daughter had it at 17, my two best friends have had it and my cousin. We are ALL success stories!
My only fear is allowing myself to fall back into old habits. I fight that daily. That's a head problem, not a surgery problem.
My advice is, make sure you are mentally ready for what happens a year+ AFTER surgery. The first year to 18 months are a breeze (for most folks) then the challenge begins.

I guess I'm the lone nay sayer. I would NOT do it again. I would do lap band. I initially did well up until I was 2 years out. Then I started having all sorts of issues with low blood sugar. After trying to get things under control for over a year with no avail, I had 60% of my pancreas removed. I've felt lousy ever since. I felt better at 260 than I do at 160. I had no blood sugar issues before surgery. I still have issues with low blood sugar but not as severe. I also now have iron deficiency anemia and need iron infusions every 3 months. I've always been religious about taking my supplements. It didn't make any difference.
So my advice would be that if you are a relative light wt - only need to lose around 100 pounds, think long and hard about what you are going to do. Ask yourself if the risks of the complications that CAN happen is worth losing wt rapidly or if a better way might be lap band and taking it slower.

Lapband is not necessarily safer. I had one and it almost killed me and I have had a revision to RNY and am much healthier now, plus have all my weight off. Please realize that new research and the newest study from this month in Obesity Surgery show that lapband is no longer the procedure of choice. Reoperation and complication rates are extremely high. I would do my surgery again in a heartbeat (the RNY) but I wouldn't touch lapband with a 10 foot pole and couldn't in good conscience recommend it to anyone.
Please realize that the longer RNY has been around, they are seeing more long term complications like reactive hypoglycemia and necidioblastosis. These can be life altering problems and not for the better. Not to mention the malabsorption issues some of us have even following the regiment religiously.
For whatever reason, at 3.5 years, I started no longer absorbing iron and now need iron infusions every 8-10 weeks. While not absorbing iron, it seems as tho I now absorb too much B6 and have B6 toxicity with the nerve damage that goes with it. Would I do it again? EMPHATICALLY NOT!
The original poster asked if we would do it again. I gave her my honest opinion based on my experience. I don't need you to attack my experience. I certainly would not attack your opinion on lap band as it was your experience, not mine. As for your experience with RNY, you're what, a year into it? I hope you still feel the same way when you are 4-5 years out. It's fine to voice your opinon, but not fine to attack someone else's.

I didn't attack anyone. How silly. I said it wasn't safer, and it isn't. I said I wouldn't recommend it, and I wouldn't. You feel the same way about RNY. That's your experience. Doesn't mean it will be the same for anyone else anymore than my lapband experience will be shared by anyone. Sorry you're having such a tough time. My post was no more attacking than yours.
