dumping/bulimia?
Hi everyone,
I'm 4.5 yrs post gastric bypass and have an interest in researching this issue. I'm back in college(getting a BS in Psych and hoping to go to Grad school in Spring2010) and I'm actually writing a paper about the issue/possiblity of bulimia after WLS. Does anyone on this board have any thoughts on the subject?
FYI..I recently made my profile only visible to my friends, simply because I may not want all my peers and professors to be in on my entire journey at thsi point, but not to hide from any of you, so if you have an interest in seeing it just let me know.
My thoughts on bulimia are that I feel several people I know may have it or something similar, post WLS. They are binging and purging, knowing they will purge simply because their puch won't hold the food. Maybe that's not true bulimia, maybe it's a new eating disorder??? Just sharing some thoughts here as I get ready to write my paper. I've found 2 articles on the issue, one written in 2006 and another in 2003. One of them was done in Mexico though. So it's clear tehere is a NEED for this subject to be looked into and I think this site certainly would be a good place to start. I think WE are the experts....we ARE the ones living with this......I'm always shocked at some of the doctors and psych professionals opinions on what we KNOW. I hope WE can teach them a few things.
If anyone has an interest in this issue or even a personal experience to share, please comment or send me a private message. I'll keep it confidential if you ask.

Tami -
This issue came up on the RNY board within the past 2 days. Someone wanted to know whether it was okay to chew and spit and many people had concerns, opinions, etc. on whether this could lead to the slipperly slope of bulimia. You might want to post on that board and/or check the threads from the past few days!
Good luck on your research!

I throw up maybe two times a month for one reason or another: ate too fast, meat was overcooked, etc. I think if you throw up accidentally (even frequently) it really isn't an eating disorder. Intent is important as I intended to keep the food in and calories down.
If someone eats to excess knowing it will make them thow up...yup, that's an eating disorder.

It's nothing new. Bulimia is the same pre or post-op.
Anyone who overfills their pouch enough times over a long period will find they stretch their stoma, and can then fill their small intestines with huge amounts of food. And will NOT be able to vomit it back up once it has left the pouch.
Why? you may ask? Because the intestines don't move foods backwards, only forward through the system. So as a way to deal with overeating, it sucks as much after WLS as it does before. In fact, it will lead to weight gain as the person can pack their small intestines with huge amounts of food.
There's also the issue of stomach acid coming in contact with the tissues of the esophogus. This chases cellular changes call Barette's Esophagus. These changes lead to cancer for some people and treatment for esophageal cancer isn't pretty or very effective.
I am answering you this way, just in case you are really asking another question besides doing research.
If you know anyone who does this, encourage them to seek help. This is a dangerous practice.
If it is for a paper, I wish you sucess with it.

i can't give you quantitative data, but i seriously suspect that a friend of my family's is a post-WLS bulemic. he's about 4 years post-op, and throws up regularly, at least a few times a week. this is 'normal' to him. his diet is pretty terrible... he refuses fruits and vegetables, and loads up on candy. he justifies this with his weight, which is exactly where it should be. my mom and i are both about 3 years post-op, and try to tell him that throwing up a few times a week at this point is NOT ok... but nobody can stop the m&ms from going into his mouth but him. :\
