Birth Control options
Hi, everybody...
I have been on some form of birth control now for about 10 years... I know that after WLS, we have absorption issues, so I went off the pill. I'm trying the Nuvaring, but having some unpleasant side effects.
If you currently take BC of any form, would you let me know what it is and if it works? I'd like to go to the doc with a plan in mind.
Thanks!

Not on BC now, so this might not help with WLS specific issues; but was on them for several years and tried many things.
If you want to continue going the hormone route, you can get an implant in your arm (like Norplant - works for 5 years) or an injection (like Depo Provera - every 3 mos, or Lunelle - every month). All these have the same health risks as BCP.
Other mechanical options are the diaphragm or cervical cap with spermicidal jelly... a little less spontaneous, and some people have sensitivities to the spermicide. It's better to get the silicone ones than latex unless you're sure neither you nor your partner have a latex sensitivity.
If you're pretty sure you don't want to have children ever, you could also consider tubal ligation and cautery (getting your tubes "tied") which is permanent. You can also get rings or clips put on your tubes laparoscopically and these can be reversed surgically with good success later on.
A lot depends on whether you think you'll want to have kids later, when that might be, and how long you want to wait once you decide... you can stop using a diaphragm at any time with no waiting period, but will need to get an implant removed/tubal reversal/stop your injections and normally have to wait a month or more to get pregnant.

Currently I am on seasonique and love it, I have been on it since Jan without any issues. Prior I was on lo-ovoral and liked that, prior to that ortho-lo and hated it. Pre-op I did depo and never had any issues, I stopped after surgery because I had been on it for 2 years and they suggest a 1 year break... I just never went back to it because I am liking the seasonique.

I started the nuvaring Sunday ...I've cried uncontrollably....Had extreme mood swings....And called the dr this am and said i think I need to get this out...She suggested I wait til Monday...That's if I dont kill anyone by then...I'm the sweet, nice, pleasant BFF, Mom, and GF. I spanked my child this week. Fussed at the kids etc.....Either my body gets use to this or its on to something else...Are you having these kinds of issues? You can e-mail me at [email protected]. I'm at work and may not get a chance to double check this b4 days end.
