1. What kind of surgery did you have and how far out are you? I had Open RNY and I am 3yrs 8mths post op.

2. Have you had any major vitamin difficiencies and are they difficult to rectify?  How far out were you when it started?   (I know yearly labs are important, but I do realize some people still follow the "rules" and things still happen) No problems with any of that as of yet. All labs check out well so far!

3.  Did the difficiencies lead to "bigger" problems?n/a

Which surgery is best for you is truly a personal decision and if you trust your surgeon, trust his/her advice. I'm happy with  my rny, but have many friends that are currently undergoing surgery and are going less invasive with the lapband~I do know that would not have been a good option for me. Also, the DS is not an option here in my area, so I never really considered it at the time and probably don't know enough about it to comment on it. Anyway,Good luck to you whatever you decide!!!!!

1. What kind of surgery did you have and how far out are you?

I had a Laparoscopic BPD/DS on June 19, 2006. (2+ years out)

No major vitamin deficiencies - I have to take more zinc and potassium than other DSers, but that's just my body chemistry.  I take more vitamins in higher doses than normal people, but most DSers do that anyway.  Considering I was on 3 different hypertension medications (at maximum dosages) and 2 different antidepressants (also on maximum dosages), taking a few vitamins with each meal is No. Big. Deal.

3.  Did the difficiencies lead to "bigger" problems?

N/A

Anything else anyone would like to add would be very helpful.

Don't believe the bad press surrounding the DS until you ask a bunch of DSers yourself.  It's a wonderful surgery that truly did Save My Life.  My life is so much easier now, in absolutely every aspect, thanks to my DS.  I can finally eat like a normal person, feel full like a normal person, and act in every way normal.  I never had that before - my life was focused on food.  Now, I'm free.

I had surgery in August, 2005. I weighed 186, now weigh around 140.  No complications from my surgery. ETA: I meant 286!

1. What kind of surgery did you have and how far out are you?
I had the DS, I will be 3 years out on Nov.1

2. Have you had any major vitamin difficiencies and are they difficult to rectify?  How far out were you when it started?   (I know yearly labs are important, but I do realize some people still follow the "rules" and things still happen)
No major deficiencies, my D got borderline low, so I started supplimenting that, and also I have been borderline anemic. I was anemic before surgery, so that is actually an improvement.

3.  Did the difficiencies lead to "bigger" problems?
Nope, caught the downward trend on my labs and took care of it!

Anything else anyone would like to add would be very helpful.

I am able to tolerate almost everything with the exception of regular pasta, I can eat the gluten free stuff! I eat what I want, making sure to get enough protein, I never count anything else, and maintain just fine. Basically my DS has allowed me to live and eat like a genetically thin person would!

Hi Vicki-
1. What kind of surgery did you have and how far out are you?
I  had lap. RNY in Atlantic city June 03 so that makes me more than 5 yrs out.  I have lost 120 lbs and had a tummy tuck done.
2. Have you had any major vitamin difficiencies and are they difficult to rectify?  How far out were you when it started?
I faithfully take me Ca++, B 12 and MVI daily and my doctor sends me to the lab annually for the full set of labs.  I haven't had any vitamen issues, as a matter of fact, I've had very few issues.  Food addiction is still a mental issue for me but for the first time with the surgery I have been able to keep my weight in line.-Donna
