 Hello All!
I have an issue:
Since my surgery, I have noticed that my teeth are decaying.  Has anyone out there experience this problem?
I take a calcium supplement but my teeth are still decaying, soft and sensitive.
As it looks I will be getting my teeth pulled and replaced.

Any one out there have advice or has gone through this problem, please let me know.

Quite possibly your calcium supplement .  It would be helpful to know how much and how often you are taking and if you are coupling it with "D".  Went through a stretch the first year of some decay but not to the degree of which you speak.  When was the last time you had blood work done and, or bone density test?

I take it 1 time  a day, and I have had blood work done 3 months ago.
Thanks for replying

I found about 6 months out that once a day was not working for me.  I increased my intake to 3x's a time and chew my calcium pills and wash them down with whatever I'm drinking.
1000 mil. 3 x'x a day of calcium citrate that has vitamin "D" added.  Do not rely on just the blood work have a bone density done after all your teeth are part of your bone structure.

I am five years out in November.
this past month my teeth have went to pot.
I have gotten 8 fillings and a crown is scheduled.
It seems they think my body is pulling my calcium from my teeth.
I have had bloodwork done and calcium is fine.
I go next week for more bloodwork.
They mentioned to check my PT something. i have it written down somewhere.
I have taken my vitamins and calcium faithfully for 5 years and then this happen this past month.
Strange.
Let us know what you find out.

So I was just at the dentist today (my mouth is still numb LOL).  I was asking him about citric acid.

I drink a lot of generic crystal light (the orange one is my fav)  and well, the no 1 ingredient is citric acid.

In the last 8 months I have had 3 cavities.  Small ones but, still, 3!  I am not eating much sugar (the occasional dark chocolate or kiss when TOM visits mostly). And, considering how much soda and sweets I use to eat pre-op I cannot figure out why the cavities.

He said the citirc acid will eat away at the enamal of your teeth.  Not necesarily cause a cavity unless it sits in a pocket of the tooth for long periosds of time and eats away.  It is the overall enamal the citirc acid deteriorates.

He did check my teeth and said I have maybe 10% enamal erosion.  Not bad, but I could benenfit from weening off the citric acid and coffee.

Even if you have labs done, your calcium will be fine because it's pulling the calcium from your bones and teeth.  The real test to see if your calcium is ok is to have a bone density scan.   My Mom was like you and about 4 yrs out, her teeth started chipping, breaking, and she had horrible dental problems.   She was not advised by her crappy doctor to take a Calcium Citrate supplement (or so I was told by her) and now she was suffering the consequences of not taking it!   She also has the beginning stages of osteoporosis!

My nut reccomended 1200 mg a day for me.   Anything over 2000 mg a day isn't absorbed btw and is the max we can take a day.   I take 3 citrical petites in the am and then 3 in the pm, you can absorb 600 mg at a time and you don't take it within 2 hrs of any iron supplement (including a multivitamin w/iron).  And make sure to get your water in each day, at least 50 oz a day to help flush your system out to help avoid kidney stones (as told to me from my doctor).

Once a day is NOT enough, you should at least be taking it 2-3 times a day!!!!

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!
