Do you think that a protein shake for breakfast starts the body moving in the morning? It seems if I eat breakfast then I am fighting the grazing all day. But does having just a protein shake start the body going for the day? My metabolism is so low already that also if I eat I'm always over on my cal. I do think that when I started this journey ,in the wt loss faze, my metabolism went way down. Now that I can eat food (I'm 3 yrs post op) if I eat over 1000 cal I gain weight. I never made it to my goal. So I just keep trying. But I'm thinking of lowering my cal to 800 a day to see if that works. 1000 I maintain,1200 I gain, so maybe 800 I'll lose. But golly G thats not much unless I just eat salad. I have 2-3 protein shakes for my snacks. How do you set your matabolism higher ? Yes I do exercize. I try to strength train. Maybe 50 squats a day. plus the weight machines at the YMCA 2-3 times a week but for only 10 minutes. I truly hate it. But I am trying. So how do I get my matabolism to move higher?

I recall once having just a cheese omelette for breakfast.  I was absolutely ravenous and ended up having a slice of toast later.  I was still seeing the dietician at the time and we discussed this.  Apparently, most folks likely have low blood sugar from the overnight fast.  If you eat just protein in the morning, you haven't really done anything to help the blood sugar.

The dieticians recommendation was the most of your carbs in the MORNING to give the body fuel for the rest of the day.  This works well for me, I like cereal, pancakes, etc.  That said, I have 3 protein supplements a day so the morning one will be coming within 3 hours of breakfast anyway.  On some days, I have the protein first and then breakfast; it depends on my schedule.

I'm like you~if I do just protein in the am I do much better throughout the day than if I start with carbs. If I have carbs in the am I'm starving all day long and then I tend to graze. I've been doing a protein shake first thing in the morning for quite awhile now and it seems to help me alot.

hi there

im no nutritionist for sure, but it seems to me that at as many years out as your are, you should be getting more of your calories from food than from protein shakes

i would talk to a nutritionsit and see if you can mix up your food intake in such a way to get your metabolism revved up again.

if you go down to 800 calories your body will think you are in starvation mode and your metabolism will slow down which is not good.

prob you need to up your calories for a bit and keep up with the exercise and the other good things your are doing.  maybe cut back a few days a week.

anyway these are my random thoughts, maybe you should post on the nutrition board here at OH and can get some help there.

good luck, jacki

I do one protein shake a day, in the morning.  I have found on days when I am really in a hurry that I really like to get a medium light coffee frap at Starbucks and have them add 3 scoops of their protein powder.  Yum!

I think you should keep on lovin' your protein shakes, personally!  There is no protein out there that is more bio-avaliable to us after WLS, I'd say you are right on the money with 2-3 a day!  I can't explain the difference having protein in my life again has made for me.  I have energy, newfound muscle tone, my mood is stablized, and I just have an overall feeling of well being.  Good for you getting your protein shakes in!  I'm a lifetimer on these things because I believe in them so much!
