When did you start weights and abdominal exercises after surgery? Right now I am waiting for my surgery to be scheduled and I have started working with a trainer to get into shape and make it a habit.

I had my surgery 3.5yrs ago open not lap so it took some time for me to completely heal. I started out slowly with just walking outside and walk away the pounds dvd's. I worked my way up from 1 to 2 to 3 miles. I stuck with the 3 miles Walk away the pounds dvd that uses 2lb weights and stretchy bands and saw great results for the first year. After that I added in 2 days of light weight training and now I love to do anything and everything! Anyway, its a progression over time. My best advice is to find something you enjoy doing and stick with it! Good Luck with your upcoming surgery and way to go on working with a trainer now to get in the best shape possible before surgery!

Like Tracy, I too had open RNY.  It was slow going, but by 6 months I was ok'd to begin lifting weights and doing ab excercises.  I started with like 5 lb weights, I kid you not, and moved up from there.  Also, by about 6 months I had healed enough to start some more involved cardio and I began with the elliptical machine.  That too was slow going.  Slow and steady wins the race.  Find what you like and do that.  Walking is wonderful and should never be underestimated!
