Kim, how much protein are you taking in most days?  Lack of protein could cause this and also thyroid problems.  Have you ever had thyroid problems before?

When did you have your last labs drawn?  Did they check your T-3, T-3 and TSH?

I agree about the protein.  It would be wise to get your labs done and you could start taking some biotin, my help.  Also, are you taking any antidepressants or mood stabalizing drugs (depakote, lamactal, nerotin?)  I lost a lot of hair on one before.  I would recommend calling the doc and being seen losing hair that much doesn't just happen there is usually a reason for it.  Have a great day and God bless, Penni

Make sure you have your doc check your iron levels as well. I would UP my protein, significantly, (like at least with every meal and very few carbs) and start on some biotin. 5000mcg or 5 mg (same amount, different measurement) would be the amount I would take. Also, silica, or horsetail extract, makes your hair come in stronger. 500mg, twice a day should help. Remember though, you may have started another shedding cycle, so I would imagine you might have to do the 3 or 4 months of shedding again.....I don't know, I'm no doc, nor do I play one on TV....but try not too panic. I've waited on women in my store that come in and tell me this very same thing. They are usually going through A- a lot of stress B- they are having a few other medical issues and their body is fighting something else or C- their vitamin levels are low. In whatever case, they always come back in 3 or 4 months later and even I can see the little nubbins sticking out all over their head! Hang in there.....my labs have totally sucked in the past, and I was supplementing like crazy!! Go figure.....

i appreciate your input so much!
i am making myself a list and i am going to the health food store tomorrow after my doc appointment - my surgeon's nurse called me back and said blah blah blah - nothing
she was nice enough but, i have gotten more info from you than i did her.

what kind of store do you have?

(i like your joke about not playing a doc on tv - i think it would be so funny if dr. phil would start each one of his shows by saying "i'm not a doctor - but, i play one on tv!  =)

It's not "my" store. I guess I could have worded that better....I work for a Vitamin Shoppe, here in Modesto.
I wouldn't fret too much about the hair thing.....Thank goodness hair grows! I still take 5mg of biotin and 500mg of silica, twice a day. Works for me!
Anytime, you have a question, just fire away! Thats what we're here for, paying it forward!

Hi Kim,
Ouch! I hear that gout is sooooo painful! What helps it though is quercetin. (you can find it in the vitamin C section) Try taking 200mg of quercetin, three times a day, see if that helps. I've also had people try cherry juice or blueberry juice (you can get either one in a capsule form also). Or you can eat fresh cherries! Just make sure you eat at least a half pound a day. (A customer of mine swears by this!)
Alcohol, especially beer, will bring on an attack, so I would tell him to minimize the alcohol consumption (or you could try! ) also avoid high doses of niacin or iron...)
Bromelain works as well, to help break up the uric acid crystals that form in the joint. The herbs dandelion and stinging nettle may also help break up the uric acid. You can find these in the herb aisle.
 Hope this helps!
