What's your average daily water intake?

Just wondering how much you WLS grads are getting.   My Mom is 5 yrs out from MGB and gets like 24-30 oz a day and I thought that was kind of low.   I am 3 months out from RNY and am getting about 50-64 oz a day (my dr reccomends at least 50oz/day).    It's hard to sometimes get the water in because of the taste and also I can't drink a ton at once like I did pre-surgery!   Is it as necessary to get as much water in a few years out as it is in the first year post op?

Just curious.

I don't have a problem getting in my water, but I do drink it almost exclusively with Crystal Light.  I'd say the amount your mom is drinking is low.  I know I'm inconsistent--minimally, about 65-75 oz./day; usually closer to 90-100 oz.  (Keep in mind that if you're drinking protein shakes w/ water or other clear fluids like Crystal Lt., that counts as both protein & water.)

I don't really know for sure the answer to your last question--I'm thinking no, it's probably not as imperative as during the first year--mainly because our earlier diet was most likely higher in protein (not that it shouldn't be later on, but I'm just saying a lot of us are more diligent about it early-on).  And a high protein, lower carb diet especially requires sufficien****er intake.  But with that said, it's still a vital part of our overall nourishment & well-being, so I try to pay attention to it.  It's one habit I've really tried to keep up on.

Always,
Jo

70oz minimum is what I shoot for.   They say the standard is it should  be half your body weight in oz.  IE: if your 120 = 60 oz a day.

water is important regardless of how far out you are.  fluids keep us hydrated and are always needed.

if you dont like the taste of water, there are lots of options, crystal light is one, diet iced tea which i dilute with extra water.

another thing im doing is to take oceanspray LIGHT juices, which are low in calories and sugar and diluting them with at least an equal amount of water.  it helps the taste and makes the water go down easier.

in the beginning you will have to sip your water.  as you get further out and your pouch heals you will be able to drink more, and drink faster.

good luck

This is something I don't do enough of--measuring my water.  I do drink alot during the day but I really need to start measuring it.  I drink the sam's choice cherry drink (mix it with water, taste just like cool aid).  I love decaf coffee (I put my protein powder in it).  I need to pay more attension because it is very important to drink water.  Have a great day and God bless, Penni

I average 78 - 112 oz a day and here's how I do it...

I start each day with  two 20 oz  cups of decaffinated tea in the morning before I eat any breakfast. I have a 20 oz mug so keeping track is a no brainer.

Then an hour or so later when I get to work, I do another decaf tea (in another 20 oz mug) if its a cold day or a 16 oz no calorie flavored water.

I do another tea or water about midday.

I then do one more on the half hour drive home.

My other rule is I always take a water or tea into any meeting I have at work. Gives me something to do, especially if the meeting runs long and gets boring!

I am a year out.  Just had TT and had a really bad bowel impaction.  It was because I did not drink enough water after surgery to dilute all the pain meds. etc.  It was HELL.  I am DEFINITELY GOING To get my water in from now on...my Dr. says about 64 oz. daily...three 20 oz. bottles...not too bad.

what is a TT?  I don't get how not drinking enough water after surgery to dilute the pain meds would give you a bowel impaction.   What did you have to do to correct it and were you in pain because of it?  Can you please explain?   Thanks.

I think by a month, I was drinking 32 oz of water and by 5 weeks I was up to 50 oz a day.   I am really hoping to work up to 64 oz a day instead of the 50 I've been doing.  Today, I pulled out some Orange Sunrise mix from Crystal Light (forgot I had it in the pantry) and made some and I really like it, just sweet enough and I love the tartness.   I think that will help me drink more water if it's flavored like this.   I am getting to the point now where I am not liking plain water and need to flavor it to get enough in a day.   I used to love plain water too, maybe it's because the weather is cooling down here or something.

I shoot for 80 ozs per day 4 20oz bottles. Spread out across the day. I try to get in 20 oz before I leave for work, then drink more on the way in (1/2 hr drive). Then I try to drink a full 20 oz on my way home. I am over 1 year out and can drink more at a time then before. Your ability to drink more does get somewhat better.

If I get in 60 that is good since I weigh 120 and that is 1/2 my body weight. Hydration is paramount, I think. It helps curb the appetite and so many other things. My dry skin cleared up after dealing with that issues for years. I was always de-hydrated in the past I guess.

I like the taste of plain water, so don't have a problem. Not sure about what you can do about making it taste better. De'caf tea would help like the other poster suggested. I do drink de'caf Yogi green tea. It's supposed to help with metabolism as well.

Good luck in your weight loss journey.

I usually get anywhere from 80-120oz.. I work night shift in a mental ward, so drinking water is what I do most of the night.. Of course I'm running to the bathroom most of the night also.. I love the grape or cherry(wal-mart brand) drink mix..  That is just about the only way I can get my water in.. I'm 5.5 years out and it is just as important to get the water in as it was in the beginning..
