alcohol problem
It sounds like you caught it pretty early on and you're doing something about it so I think that's great news! I'm not a huge drinker (pre or post op), but I did have one incident since surgery where I did drink too much and don't remember 4hrs of my life~that scared the he!! out of me! Thankfully it was in a safe situation and my husband was there with me, but I honestly don't remember dancing for 3hrs and acting stupid~not good! Anyway, good luck with AA and keep us posted on how things are going for you.

Thanks for the reply...Its nice to hear other people do things when drinking and can't remember...Its called a blackout. I am doing okay going to meetings and not drinking but it is so scary to know how on the edge I am with FOOD and you name it. My situation was not safe I drove drunk and I too honestly don't remember a lot of what I did.....
"Cross addictions" are quite common with RNY patients. Many were addicted to food, and once the wt was lost, they seemed lost. So another addiction was chosen--drugs, shopping, alcohol, etc. A professional counselor in my support group tells of a large upswing in patients she sees for addictive behaviors are RNY patients. Her recommendation is to find the root cause of your addictive behavior, work on that, and that will help you. There are at least 3 patients in that same group who have talked about alcohol issues after RNY surgery. One Japanese doctor consultant on another forum spoke on this topic before. According to her, one glass of wine or booze to a RNY patient is the same as a normal person having 5 glasses. You'll get drunk quickly, sober up quickly, and be tempted to do it again. Only problem is that your blood alcohol does not return to normal. So, even if you figure you're OK to operate a vehicle, chances are you'll get a ticket for being intoxicated, as you'll probably fail any breath test for blood alcohol levels. DAVE
