I had RNY and probably shouldn't comment on lap bands, but that never stopped me before. I do have a couple of friends with bands. One did pretty good, the other, not so good. It's just like the other surgeries. A lot of it's gonna be up to you. You'll have some help to keep you from overeating as much, but you'll need to make better food choices and do some good working out to get the results you want. And the real truth is, you'll have to do it from now on! From my experience with RNY, losing it wasn't that big a deal, keeping it off will be the real challenge. Have you had some pre-surgical counseling, or do you plan to use a support group after surgery? That seems to help a lot of people, and I don't take advantage of it as much as I should. I think it's pretty normal to be apprehensive right before WLS. It's a big step, but everything will turn out OK.

Hi,
I am sure there are some with the band who have regrets but I am not one of them, every WLS has it's plusses and minuses , I chose the least drastic surgery for ME. I know 15 people with bypass ( 2 are my own daughters) and the ONLY ones who are "healthy" are the young ones  , all the others have gained their weight back one is keeping off 100 but had become a brittle diabetic , she was not before surgery 6 years ago............
I do know several bandsters and most of us still want to loose about 20 and we all still work at our food choices...same as bypassers. I know a bandster who had 180 to loose and has only lost 20 since surgery 3 years ago....daily "treats" like ice cream don't work well with the band ( duhhh).
I do not know any bandster who have gained all their weight back , I have gained when I have been on vacation and I deserved every pound of it , but it came off quickly when I got home.
I was dissapointed about a few things with the band , my full feeling wasn't the same ( as satisfying) as before surgery but I am used to it now so it is no big deal. I am RARELY hungry!!! that is such a blessing. They will have to pry my band out of my cold dead hands!!!!
Best wishes , it takes work and some struggle , but it is all worth it!!!
No regrets here , or at least no big regrets.

Well,  I can tell you there are a lot of us OLD bypassers around who are healthier than they have ever been and who have NOT gained their weight back, and I am one of them.  I am 2.5 years out, have resolved all but one of my very serious health issues, and the one that is not completely resolved is improved incredibly.  I am 52 and am healthier than I have been in 30 years.  I had diabetes, severe congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hyperthyroidism,,,

I think an earlier poster was right when she said the losing is easy.  After that, we still have to make the choices on how we want to continue to live our lives.  We have to make smart choices but with the same food-oriented minds we had before the surgery.  That is the challenge.  The tool will help, but the further out you get, the more you have to rely on choices and habits.

I don't regret one moment.  Three weeks out I had a meltdown, and I got it out of the way.  From that point on,  I have only moved forward.

Very best of luck to you.  Hugs.

Hi,
The lapband is the best thing I have ever done!  no regrets!  Have I gained weight back?  YES.  But that is not because of the Lapband, that is because of me, and old habits.  I also have several friends who have had gastric bypass, they have gained weight also--- for the same reason I have, because we revert back to old habits.  :)   For those of us with weight issues, we will always struggle, WLS (of any kind)  is a tool to help you, and it gives you a great jumpstart, but in the end............it is you who loses the weight.

So yes, the Band is awesome!  :)  no regrets!

You can do it!!!  Just follow the advice of your Doctor and Nutritionist.  :)  Eat healthy, excercise, --- you will do great!

I don't have a LapBand but did consider it before I heard about the VSG.  After weighing both the Band and the VSG I decided hands down the VSG was the non-malabsorptive surgery for me.  Check around on the Revision forum and the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy forum there are several unfortunately unhappy bandsters who had severe complications with the band and are now seeking and/or have had revisions.

Every surgery has it's pros and cons.

You probably aren't going to like my post, but you asked, so I'm going to reply. I had lapband and honestly is was one of the worst things I ever did to myself. Not only did I not lose the weight I wanted to, I had two slips, erosion of the band, blackened teeth, inability to eat foods that are necessary to lose weight and maintain any weight loss due to vomiting. I had a revision to RNY gastric bypass exactly one year ago. Since I've had both surgeries, I feel like I can honestly talk to this thread. They are lightyears different. I have had little to no hunger with RNY (I was always hungry with lapband and had to work at it SO hard, despite many fills and unfills). I am able to eat healthy now. I weigh 118 as of this morning (only 8 pounds to goal of 110), and am happier than I have ever been. I wish honestly that I had picked RNY first. There just is no comparison. I had a lot of heartbreak and wasted years due to lapband and could never in good conscience recommend it to anyone. While I know I'm going to get blasted by lapbanders who love their surgery, I also have done a lot of research on it since having all my problems. The reoperation rate years out is higher than the reoperation rate years out for RNY. But to me, the most important thing is that I have now lost virtually all my excess weight, I'm wearing a size 2-4 depending on the clothes. That's enough for me. That and not having the terrible hunger and constant trying to diet that I had with lapband. Also, if you like sweets, please realize you will have no problem with them whatsoever with lapband. Chocolate and ice cream go down with no problem at all. Be as honest with yourself as you can going into this surgeries. Revisions can be hard to get (insurance doesn't always cover them unless there is something actually wrong with the band). I'm so, so sorry I picked the lapband. I keep wishing I had those years back.

I agree with Charlestown mom. The band is not how I would go. I had my band removed after 3 slips inless than a year, the vomiting, the feels, the food gettign stuck its just not worth it. I'm saving for a VSG, and yes with out the band i've gaind 2pounds in 3 months despite working out and eating right. Please reconsider and do the VSG, in the long run it is less painful and cheaper. fills for me were 200 a pop.

Hi, just wanted to say I have my surgery for lap band on the day before you. I have had lots of second thoughts about the lap band but because  it isn't rearanging my organs I will stick with the band and follow the rules to the t . Keep in touch, we can share our journey. Tracey
