Low Blood Sugar
I did my blood work this morning and had barely got to work when the doctor's office called and said that I had a glucose level of 39. They wanted to know if I had fasted before the test. I hadn't fasted, so they said they'd get back to me but to eat something in the meantime. My glucose level has been in the 70's before but never this low. Anyone else run into this problem? I did the test about an hour after my usual breakfast of banana, cottage cheese and cheerios.
Thanks,
Pam

I have had several occasions lately ( in the last 4-5 months) where I get very light headed, perspire like crazy, feel nauseated, kind of foggy and each time it was low blood sugar. The research I found is that its called reactive hypoglycemia. I even bought myself a monitor and have told my family just in case I should actually pass out on and not be able to help myself. I recognized the symptoms because diabetes runs in my family and I have had some experience with family. Talk to your physician about it. Get the info you can and make sure your family and friends no whats going on with you 'Just in case:. Huggzz, Bejai.

Thanks, Bejai. I've never heard of reactive hypoglycemia. I'll google it and try to find out more about it, and talk to my doctor. Did they actually test you for it? I've had some of those symptoms but just put it off to finally reaching menopause. I guess I forget that my surgery really did change the way my body works and there can be consequences.

I have reactive hypoglycemia from the weight loss. I have to eat every couple of hours. If I'm real active, more than that. And I have to eat the right things, or my sugar level will spike and then drop down to nothing. I eat some peanut butter and wheat bread, some Kashi products, some peanuts, or something like that. I sometimes have to get up at night and eat , and keep something by the bed just in case. From what I've heard and read, it doesn't always get better with time. :(
Wanda,
Wow! That seems really extreme. Do you manage to keep an even keel or do you still have problems? Are there problem foods or things to avoid? Like I told Bejai, sounds like some of what I attributed to menopausal symptoms might actually be caused by this. How did they actually test you for it? Thanks for your insight.

I got tested a few months ago and they confirmed the hypoglycemia, although I pretty much knew it anyway. They didn't exactly tell me to eat every two hours, I just seem to do better that way. If I lay around the house all day and don't do much, I don't drop too low, but if I do my usual routine workouts and stay busy all day, when it starts to drop, it drops really fast. I keep Kashi bars in my purse so I won't be caught unprepared. I have to eat just before and after a hard workout, for sure. I have to avoid sugar (of course) and high carb foods. If I eat more than half an apple, it will mess me up. I really don't let it bother me, it's just something I have to watch. The foods I'm supposed to avoid are the ones people attribute to weight gain and sometimes cause me to dump, so it all works out OK. Maybe you won't have to keep as close an eye on your levels, hope so anyway.
