anemic

I got my labs done last week and found out this evening that I am anemic.  My surgeon is having me go on a new med for three weeks to see if we can get the iron up.  My B12 was low also so I am on my shots again.  My energy level has been low and I seem to get sleepy more easily.  I just wanted to share.  Thanks for listening, and God bless, Penni

Can I gather from this that somehow someone thinks that you do not need B12 for life? Or iron?

They are for life. Forever.

What kind of iron?

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

I'm sorry to hear that. Were you supplementing your iron and b12? If so, how much were you taking daily? I hope the dr's can get you turned around quickly!

Penni,
I asked to see a hemotologist cause my primary Dr didnt manage the anemia well I thought. They did more detailed blood work and a reticulate count(spelling) anyway its more detailed than normal iron level labs.. end of story was that i did iron sucrose iv infusions.. they helped. Oral Iron just didnt cut it for me. I get really constpated from it anyway.
I am pregnant now( know you from the post wls preganacy board) that makes things challenging.. I am anemic again with the pregnancy.. but still in my 1st trimester..not sure how they will handle it now.. but stay on the meds.. Anemia is so hard..feeling so sleepy, tired and cranky is no way to live:-)

I am also anemic, the dr doesn't seem too concerned about it just told me to get some over the counter iron, which makes me ill. so I don't take it. I feel ok other than running out of steam once in a while. is being anemic bad?

YES ANEMIA IS BAD!  Anemia is a lack of oxygen in your blood caused by (most popular) B-12 or Iron deficiency...With a lack of oxygen in your blood, your heart , brain and organs all fight for the oxygen...Just getting your heart rate up can cause a heart attack, brain damage etc.  You need to get on IRON  that is more tender on your body...I was anemic 4 months ago and took Tender Iron from Vitalady and am no longer anemic  (low but in the normal ranges)  I felt soooo much better in only two weeks after taking it.  Please contact Vitalady or at least get on carbonyl iron...DO NOT TAKE ferrous sulfate (or other iron salts) those are useless to us with RNY and cause all those side effects (TOXIC) ...Carbonyl iron is easy on your guts and absorbable and non toxic.  Don't take your anemia lightly...You can begin to feel sooo much better...It takes a long time to build your iron back up...but it's possible...I am living proof of that!

I take carbonyl iron (Tender Iron) by Vitalady...I went from anemic to normal ranges in 2 months and still working on raising my iron levels...(Get retested friday!)  B-12 is probably the cause of your anemia and the shots should begin to help soon...But I sware by the Tender Iron and I really hope that your doc didn't put you on Iron Salts...If he did, I'd challenge him....and tell him that iron salt (ferrous sulfate)  is dissolved in stomach acid and then absorbed in the small intestines...

You have little stomach acid with RNY and your small instestines are bypassed, making Iron Salts nearly impossible to aborb...And as toxic as Iron salts are and with all the side effects it will do you more harm than it will ever do you any good...Please see what iron you were given and check out what I have told you yourself...Take it serious and learn what you can about RNY and Iron...You MUST remember that you are no longer equipped with a normal anatomy...and sometimes doctors forget that too...It's still very alien for many doctors

Good luck
