What is Coromega? and is flaxseed the same as omega 3 fish oil capsules? I am sorry but the doc that did my surgery had no idea, gave me no info and he no longer does the surgery. I am unfamiliar with what we absorb or dont absorb. and getting just 30% of fats and oils. Is that from everything? Can you please explain?
it's omegas in a pudding like form. they are in little packets, similar to fast food ketchups? it is fish oil, but emulsified. 3 flavors.
flax has omegas.
HDL is the good cholesterol, and it's very bad if it's too low. So for the person whose went up, that's GOOD.
LDL is bad.
my friend reminds me:
HDL = happy
LDL = lousy
lol

sorry, hit send before i realized you asked another question
really, surgeons are not all that great with the tiny details of after-life. i mean, they trained to be surgeons, not dietitians. i want my surgeon to keep up to date on equipment, technique, rx. i can't expect him to keep up to date on OTC stuff, and every teensy detail. Only so much room and I want HIS spaces filled with the stuff only he can do.
picky, huh?
I'm a very distal rny, so pouch like you, but intestines like a DS. I only absorb about 5% of fats/oils. It shows up in my lipids and fat soluble vites. The 5% is a guess and maybe some days it's 10%, others only 2%. Can't measure except the labs. I have to supplement the fat soluble vites in huge doses to hold nice fluffy healthy levels.
Proximals only absorb between 30-50% of fats.oils, depending on exactly how their surgery was done. Again, it's visible in labs. Lipid panel and vites A, D, E, K.
However, we do get 100% of sugars, for sure. No malabsorbing of them, darn it. We get 100% of alcohol, too.
where we have trouble:
protein
iron
calcium
A, D, E, K
B1 (other b vites)
B12
zinc
and as more studies show up, selenium and a few others, but I am not fluent in the newer stuff. I just buy a simple selenium at Costco, take one and tests showing lower end of normal ranges.

I started taking Flaxseed oil in the capsule four per day for what I hoped would help my constipation. The net result was my labs in Dec 07 were HDL 41, in April it raised to 61!!
I have now cut back to two per day (capsules) and have added ground flaxseed to my food for the constipation, I still get the benefit of the omega-3's but with fiber.

I swallow my gel caps...They dissolve VERY fast...Learned that the hard way when i didn't get to a glass of water immediately and it ran out into my mouth....All I can say about that is OMIGAWD! ::::gag:::::
I take MegaRed Krill Oil from Antarctic Krill...It is said to be three times as potent as Fish Oil in a smaller dosage. Plus there are added antioxidants to preserve the oil so it doesn't go rancid...No after taste either, as long as it doesn't melt in your mouth first...The gel cap itself tastes like vanilla! Nice!
I am a little afraid of just plain regular fish oil unless it says that it is pharmaceutical grade and checked for purity (because of toxins in our fish such as mercury, dioxins and others that have long term effects... Then again...I eat a lot of fish anyway...so I might as well just stat praying, I guess!
As for Flax seed...It's adifferent form of omega 3 and is not nearly as absorbable as fish oil...but then again, we supposedly don't absorb oil based vits very well anyway...I know I don't...so I eat flax and take the MegaRed (By Shifft) I get it at Costco...I began taking it regualry when i became aware that I was very magnesium (brain problems) and iron deficient (heart and cell problems)as well as having hight blood platelets. (Sticky, clotty blood) Omega 3's aid in all three of these problems...Aids in brain and heart health as well as thins the blood and lowers bad fats....Plus it is said to be as close to the best youth in a pill as there is...So I'd take it anyway! I get in as much from eggs and flax seeds too! Flax is a good fiber as well...so it's got other useful benefits....
I got a bagful of Coromega samples (which is pharm. quality) from the Vitamin Shoppe Guy...And uh.....well that's a flavor that if your tastebuds could speak...they'd probably scream first and then say "What in the name of food is that?" Because that's pretty much what I said after squeezing one in my mouth.....It's not an unpleasant flavor per se....but it's definitely NOTHING you have EVER tasted in your life, unless you ever had a tart orange and fish flavored creamy dreamsicle! Well it's not quite that bad...You don't taste the fish...at first....It's tart and creamy and thick and then you begin to swallow it and it's like..."WHAT IS THAT???FISH???? But it's so faint that you really don't quite know what to think of it until you begin the repeating lemon-lime or orange fish burps...And again...it's not horribly gross, but fishand orange is just not two flavors I particularly love together...
My husband loves the stuff.....He can't taste the fish...Me and my 21 yo son both get the fish burps, although my son doesn't mind them so much...I cannot handle them daily...so I have to eat something afterwards or I'll get queasy and I only take the coromega when I can talkmyself into it... So...with all that said...
Just swallow the gel cap! LOL and hopefully you are absorbing some of it!
