I am 3+ years out. my cholesteral has been fantasti****il my latest labs and its up from 157 to 205!

I am not eating anything different at all. I hardly eat past, bread , butter and the white stuff.  I eat mostly proteins, fruits, veges and protein drinks. I eat cheese, more than meat, could that be the culpret? But again, the amount of cheese hasn't increased over these 3 years.
Has anyone else had this problem post wls?

First all, let me just say. I am not a doctor. But I have understand that women have a natural helper in estrogen that assists us keeping our cholesterol low. Unfortunately, as time marches on and our estrogen levels decline, this can have an impact on cholesterol. Maybe there are some medical know bee's out there who can confirm or deny this. As with everything, some people fall out of the norm..

The other thing to question would be the kind of meat protein and fats you are eating. Fat in cheese I don't think is good for chol...

One more thing, sometimes you will just have a fluke test. Take it again to be sure.

Good luck in getting it identified and back below 200.

Hmmm, I'm not really sure. Did your dr have any ideas about this? I will be checking back to see if anyone has any thoughts on this.

Do you know the ratios of your good and bad cholesterol? Maybe your good cholesterol has increased. Other than that, is there a family history of elevated cholesterol? ALso were you fasting when you had the test done?

hdl 104
ldl 97
chol/hdlc ratio 2.1

could be a mistake, but I don't want to take chances . Just baffeled!!

You HDL is sky high and thats a good thing, its the one that represents your exercise! So this is what is bringing your totals up.  I think u are fine.

  • Total cholesterol level should be 135 - 200 mg/dL.
  • LDL cholesterol ( bad cholesterol ) should be less than 130 mg/dL.
  • HDL cholesterol ( good cholesterol ) should be greater than 30 mg/dL. Raising HDL cholesterol was not a priority until a few years ago. Most studies had focused on how lowering LDL cholesterol that can reduce the risk or coronary heart disease. But in the past few years, researchers have identified that HDL acted as an independent factor and was also critical in the overall health of your heart.
  • The ratio of Total cholesterol / HDL cholesterol should be 4.0 – 6.0 (for males) and 3.7 – 5.7 (for females). This ratio is an important indicator of health. Since LDL cholesterol can damage your arteries and HDL cholesterol helps your arteries, this ratio is a good indicator of the potential of cholesterol, in general, to help or hurt your arteries. Additionally, there are separate guidelines for male and female – recognizing the inherent differences in women’s and men’s bodies.

This happened to me too.  It really took me by surprise since I know my diet is consistent.  My dr said it's probably genetics that is forcing it back up.  The one thing that changed is I became complacent with my exercise and was not near as faithful as I had been.  I always exercised, just not as often.  I decided to beat this thing and took exercise seriously just to see, and my cholesterol came down dramatically.  Now, in the meantime my dr had me do a EBCT and found I have plaque build up so he put me on Zocor for the meantime and I was hoping I could see how much my exercise alone would bring it down but my cholesterol came down 61 points in a month and a half.  Pretty good and I know most of that is because of the exercise.  His nurse said medicine alone would have probably brought it down 15-20 points.

hi there

i still have high cholesterol two years after surgery.  my pcp did not seem all that worried about it.

last time they checked it was still 249 although all my other labs were good.

sometimes its caused by family history.  she did not want me to take anything to lower it at this point, so im not worrying about it.

i do wonder though if the fact that i eat more cheese and milk products in general, could be the culprit.

oh well, i guess everything cant be perfect.

hugs, jacki
