I use Gold Bond Medicated Powder, buy it over the counter. The store brand just doesnt seem to work as well. Every day when I get out of the shower vor under my apron, breasts & belly button. If I dont use it daily, the next morning I am beat red and in pain. (creams never worked, kept area too moist)

I had the same problem with my belly button, partially due to a large umbilical hernia. Yes, the odor is due to bacteria growth. I read/heard that the belly button is by far one of the dirtiest places on the human body, so it is no wonder that it would develop an odor.

The idea is to kill and prevent the growth of bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide, alcolhol, etc. kill the bacteria, but do nothing about the moisure. Powders resolve the moisture problem (temporarily), but do nothing about bacteria. Anti-fungal creams kill fungus, not bacteria.

My remedy is to use a bit of anitbiotic ointment everyday after showing. I am careful to dry the area and then rub a tiny bit of ointment all around the inside (sorry for the graphic details). This prevents the bacteria growth, hence no odor! And...it is an extremely inexpensive treatment that requires no Rx, nor does it cause any discomfort (Unless you are squeamish about putting your finger in your belly button.)

Short of having hernia and plastic surgery to remove my belly, this is a good solution for me.

Good luck all!
