How much vomiting is "too much" ??

So far I am about 5 months out and I am throwing up at least once a week, sometimes twice. I am going through my food diary with a fine tooth comb and there are no trends that I can find. And to add insult to injury, food will feel great going down and almost A FULL HOUR LATER I will feel the pressure and be sick for like 2 hours.

How often is everyone else getting sick? I don't know if I need an endoscopy yet because sometimes I can eat meat, sometimes I throw it up (prepared exact same way at home), same with other foods that seem to come up. Is once a week kind of normal 5 months out or is it too often?

I don't know if its "normal",but I can say that this happened to me often during the first year and even at 3+yrs still happens at times. Mine is not so much a volume problem though~I know there are times when I eat too quickly, don't chew quite enough or take an accidental swallow. I can also say if I get upset while eating, my food WILL get stuck and I will suffer for hours. Also, if things are too dry they just don't go down right for me. Like you I can eat something one day and its fine, but the next time I try to eat the same exact thing I might have a problem. I can say that it has slowed down and doesn't happen very often anymore~whenever it does happen I tell dh that was my monthly reminder that I'm not "normal", LOL!

One last thought is to follow your gut instincts. If you feel its a medical problem, don't hesitate to call your dr and have some tests run. Good Luck!

I would address with your surgeon and see what their feeling is on it. My surgeons said throwing up is "not normal" and shouldnt be accepted as being ok... however a lot of other surgeons/people think throwing up is just part of the process. Personally I have never thrown up so throwing up once a week to me is a lot! But I know a lot of others throw up a lot.
What is strange to me is that an hour later you are throwing up - typically a lot of people throw up from eating too much too quickly but that cant be your case if its happening later.... but then again its not happening all the time so its hard to chalk it up to your stoma needing to be stretched. Hopefully somebody can offer more advice but I would call just in case to see their thoughts/feelings - better to be safe than sorry right?

Hi,

My suggestion is if you are worried than you should just call your doctor.  Everyone is different.  When you explain it to your doctor he should be able to tell you whether he thinks you should be evaluated or not.  Good-Luck!!!

I found that the only time I got sick was when I overindulged or ate too quickly and to be honest that has been rare. I don't think that vomiting is 'normal' or too be expected. Since you are having a consistent issue with it, I strongly suggest that you contact your surgeon and ask them to work with you to determine the underlying cause and help you find a solution.

Wishing you all the best,

Barb

Since you are only 5 mos out...It might be more "normal" than not....but don't wait til it's a huge problem...Call and document this stuff into your medical records...Sometimes symptoms don't all show up at once and need a few more to pin point a more serious or progressive problem...

I occassionally get sick on fake sweeteners...or a combo of two different ones....It hits me about 30-40 minutes after I eat it...So I decided to try a combo that I KNOW makes me ill and I decided to pay close attention and sure enough I had warning signs after a few bites...but must have just ignored it before...So now I know me and aspartame do not like each other!

It might me something simple like that or it might be a warning to something else...But I don't believe vomiting is "normal" and I rarely have in the entire 4 1 /2 years post op...

Personally, I hate puking and don't consider it normal at all. Get yourself to your doctor and have this checked out. You have kept a journal and have found no trends so treat this as serious.

With the DS: there is no stoma, so no stoma strictures; there are no limitations (other than volume) against drinking before, during or after meals; 80% of ingested fat is malabsorbed; 98.9% of type II diabetics are CURED of this devastating disease, with data showing stable cure over 10 years out; there is the best average weight loss and most durable (average 76% excess weight loss going out 10 years) of all of the bariatric surgeries.  That's why I had a DS!
