Low Blood Sugar/3 yrs out/-300#
I was wondering if any of you are having any problems with low blood sugar? I just recently started to experience this and don't like it at all. Does anyone know why this starts happening now and what are you doing to combat it? I don't want this to get me to start feeling like I have to eat more or more often now! Thanks for any insight any of you can give me. God bless! Love, Cindy
PS I have e-mailed my surgeon's office about this and am waiting their reply. My blood sugar was down to 46 this past Sunday evening!!!! I haven't had a problems since.

I deal with this all the time. What seems to help me is staying away from carbs. If I follow an atkins program Im usually ok. When I do eat carbs I know in an hour or two ill cra****s hard to manage. I went from 3 shots of insulin a day, to now dealing with the lows.

same with me. If I eat cereal or other white carbs for breakfast, I can time it & in 90 min. I will get all shaking,& light headed. So if I do eat cereal I add a protein to it & eat less cereal. I'm not a big cereal eater but sometimes due to time or I just want it I do eat it. But I'm learning to adjust this also. I need to stay away from white evil food anyway.lol.
Hi Jen, I checked my blood sugar with my husband glucose meter, due to diabetes. Have you thought about sharing this with your doctor yet? I have not heard back from the nutritianist and my surgeon's nurse said to just listen to my body and eat some cheese when I feel my blood sugar going low. I'm not a happy camper! I want to know what I need to do to STOP it from happening. Hope you figure yours out too. Keep in touch! God bless!
Cynthia,
LBS (Low Blood Sugar) comes from a rise of blood sugar which released too much insulin in the body. During this spike, insulin works too well and drops blood sugars out of normal range and into the lows. In order to stop this from happening, you need to evaluate your nutrition plan. Too many carbohydrates per meal is causing the insulin spike. The normal ranges for controlling blood sugars are 15g-45g of carbohydrates per meal. You also have to combine these number of grams of carbohydrates with enough proteins and fats in order to slow the rise of blood sugar. Decreasing your carbohydrate intake to far (Atkins Level) will decrease your metabolism and cause you to store more fat in the long run. The key is to eat 5-6 mini meals of balanced carbohydrate to protein ratio. Reseach Diabetic Carb Count or Exchange.
Good Luck!

Hi Cynthia - did you ever hear anything back from your doctor about the blood sugar drops? That's actually why I'm back here after being away from the site for years. I had RNY in March 2000 and have been relatively successful and stabilized weight-wise for years even after giving birth.
Something that is plaguing me is blood-sugar drops. I've tried all the suggestions - protein only breakfast, low carbs, everything. But I still get them and its not even consistent so that I can target what exactly is causing it. I am now eating plain oatmeal for breakfast and that seems to help, but not always. I rarely get them in the afternoon or evening - just morning. I even had to leave the gym last week during a drop which made me lose out on a much-needed workout :)
I'd love to hear what your doctor said/suggested. I moved so I haven't spoken to my surgeon in many years, so I don't have a "professional" resource locally.
Thanks in advance,
Jessica
