Loss of an OH member

I am very sad to inform you that Vickie Johnson (Vickie J) passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2008.  She was a wonderful friend to me and a great mentor and supporter to all the members of our local support group as well as the friends that she made on OH.

Vickie was 3 1/2 years out and died from an intestinal blockage that was a result of her RNY surgery although could have been treated had she been given the correct diagnosis.  Unfortunately she was traveling and ended up in a small hospital that was not familiar with gastric bypass surgery.  By the time they transferred her to a major medical center she was in critical condition and subsequently died.

For those that knew Vickie she was a true friend and will be greatly missed.

OMG Joanne I am in shock and disbelief right now.  Vickie and I had surgery very close together and have talked many, many times.

I will keep Joanne's family and friends in my prayers, this is a sad day.

What a terrible loss. I knew her as soon as i saw her picture on her profile. Wow, our fat may be gone, but the risks associaited to our altered anatomy remain. A startling reminder.
Peace and Blessings, Melinda

From what I have found out this can happen to anyone but we are at higher risk.  We just need to be aware an advocate for ourselves if we have abdominal pain.  I agree it is a terrible loss.

Take care,
Joanne

OMG.  I am 4 1/2 years out and I remember her from the years I have been on here.  A sweet, sweet lady.  I am so sorry to hear about her death especially the cir****tances of it. How very very sad indeed.  That is really scary too. Thanks for letting us know. I will remember her family in prayer.

When I clicked on the link you provided and saw Vickie's picture at the bottom, I was just so sad.  Her surgery was a few months after mine, and I have always enjoyed her posts.  She was always an uplifting kind of person with a great attitude and sense of humor, and since she was more in my age range than lots of posters on OH, I especially liked to hear what she had to say on any topic.

My heartfelt condolences to her family.

Always,
Jo

Jo,

I can so relate.  When I went to my first support group meeting pre-op she and Garry (her husband) were there and as you said around my age.  I was so nervous and she made feel very comfortable and was so positive and informed she became my mentor and  good friend.  Vickie had the knack for talking to people, it didn't matter who they were or what age or stage they were in, she was able to relate to them.  She will be so missed.

I will pass on your condolences to her family.
Take care,
Joanne
