I just thought I'd throw this out there to help anyone. It helps me a TON.

Once you figure out your BMR, start logging everything that goes into your mouth and aquire the knowledge that there is 3500 calories in a pound. You can understand how all this works.

So, my BMR is right aroud 1500. I should shoot for about 1200 calories a day to lose weight.

Not an expert but I do use google a lot ! LOL!

Oh yeah, BMR=Basal Metabolic Rate.

You use energy no matter what you're doing, even when sleeping. The BMR Calculator will calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR); the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day.

If you've noticed that every year, it becomes harder to eat whatever you want and stay slim, you've also learnt that your BMR decreases as you age. Likewise, depriving yourself of food in hopes of losing weight also decreases your BMR, a foil to your intentions. However, a regular routine of cardiovascular exercise can increase your BMR, improving your health and fitness when your body's ability to burn energy gradually slows down.

Wow, this post was very imformative--thank you so much.  By calculating numbers it looks like I need to do 1500 cal. to loose weight--I think!  Its all so complicated.

Very good post, Molly! I agree ... once you start logging everything... you will begin to understand more and more each day. If  wls grads know their BMR.... then they will know how much to eat....then balance that out with a workout routine....etc.... then you will start to lose weight! :-)

I'm curious why you chose the 1200 calorie amount as one to use in order to lose weight.  You replied to a post of mine 2 days ago, with a similar scenario, stating that the 900 calories is extreme (my bmr is 1300).  It seems to me that we're trying to accomplish the same thing.

Hey Patti,

I chose 1200 calories for myself because I am extremely sedintary right now. I am not cleared to workout right now. You do though right?

to add to my previous post...I run 6 miles a day.  I'm certainly not looking for an easy way out, I just want to get over a several-month plateau.

Wow!!!! You answered my question before I had a chance to post it!

If you are running 6 miles a day and eating 900 calories...please up that caloric intake right away.

I GOOGLE everything! LOL! I am NOT a Fitness expert! I am just a girl who loves body sculpting and lifting weights. I don't care about losing weight. I just wanna look good and be a hottie! Muscle weighs more than fat and I don't wanna look skinny and sick.

Hey...
I am currently eating about 1300 calories/day, which is equal to my bmr.  But even with my current exercise routine I am not able to lose any weight.  So... I must need to decrease my intake...do you know of a website to turn to to determine what my caloric intake should be in order to LOSE?

I googled "BMR lose weight" and found this:

Does that help?

Edited to add: Here's another great search. The first link on the page looks really helpful!
