colon cleansing and body detox after WLS
Just out of curiosity, have any of you tried this? I've been thinking about purchasing a cleansing system from GNC and trying it out. The only thing is that I'm a little scared. Since my "innards" are re-routed I'm afraid that I'll end up causing damage to my body. While weight loss is a part of my reasoning for wanting to do this, my main reasoning is because I haven't been regular since surgery. I'm thinking this will help with my bloating as well. Any opinions?
I havent tried - but I researched and it was just too iffy for me to do it. I also love love love DrOz and he was against them so that sealed the deal for me. On the flip side my friends brother is a chiro and strongly believes in them - their whole family does them quite often and they are pleased with the results *shrug* I dont personally think it would help with bloating in the long term - perhaps short term since these tend to dehydrate you some but if you have chronic bloating I would think there would be some sort of reason why?

You can do it much cheaper just by eating a high fiber snack daily...It scrubs your colon and intestines quite nicely....That helps get the build up out and you absorb vits and mineral better too. Fiber One cereal is so awesome and a great little half cup snack for me...Tastes great as a crunchy snack on yogurt, icecream, pudding, as or in other cereal or plain...
Fiber also absorbs toxins and bacteria and unfortunately some vits too...so don't eat fiber with your vitamins...Do them seperate!
Good luck!
Also, using them for weight loss is not logical. Any weight loss would be water weight (since colon cleansers cause water to be released into the colon which would then be expelled). The water would just build back up into the body (because it is SUPPOSED TO BE THERE) - hence any water weight lost would come back.
The body does an amazing job of keeping the colon "clean" on it's own. Even in post-ops or people who have chronic constipation for other reasons, the body does not need help "cleaning" the colon.
Per an RD on the nutrition forum, (I have removed her avie & screen name to comply with TOS.)

Post Date: 1/18/08 3:54 am I've not tried them, and I don't promote them. Just my two cents. |

Post Date: 1/19/08 9:24 pm FYI - I am a dietitian - I work with about 20 different dietitians and know about 75 dietitians. NONE of them ever recommend colon cleansers. I highly disagree with the poster who said it's recommend 3 times per year. And, I highly doubt the information given to you by that poster was the advice of a dietitian. |
