Changing your goal

How many of you have revised your goal weight once you've gotten close to it and maybe decided that where you were was really ok and you were content to stay there.

I am about 10 lbs. from my revised goal. Originally, I had a goal of 125/130. I changed it to be 115 quite some time ago. I am currently fluctuating between 124 and 126, so I'm at my original goal and pretty content with where I am for the most part. Part of me wants to just stop agonizing over the last 10 lbs. that are really just for my head. My body looks pretty good (except for skin). I am healthy, feel good, and I'm relatively happy with my size. Does it sound like a cop-out to change my goal back to the original one, which I've already attained? It almost seems like superficial success to me or something. (And yes, I realize that's not entirely rational thinking either.)

Amy, you're at a perfect weight right now and I don't know why you'd benefit from losing another 10 pounds. Everybody sets goals, and the reality is that we lose down to where our bodies want to be, regardless of the number we came up with. You said it yourself, you look good, feel good, happy with your size ... you stay right there and don't you try to lose a bunch more weight.

Thanks Wanda. I think part of me is very, very afraid of having any bounce back weight...and so having that little bit of "cushion" is somewhat relieving for my mind. But then I also think that maybe that's just continuing to have the whole diet mentality of bouncing up and down, even if it's by a smaller amount. If I loose a little more, I'm ok with that. But if I don't, I really think I'm ok with that too. :)

Hi Amy! It sounds like you're at a great weight to me!!! I don't think losing another 10lbs would make you any healthier or happier than the weight you're at right now! I don't think its a cop-out. I think we all get caught up in losing, losing, losing b/c its all so new and wonderful to us and stopping that process is a scary though~although its necessary at some point. I believe that finding a weight that we can reasonably maintain for the long haul is one of the most important parts of this whole process. Could you lose another 10lbs? Sure! But would it be easy to maintain at such a low weight? Who knows, maybe/maybe not. My dr's goal for me was 165lbs (I am 5'9"). My personal goal was 150. He told me that I would probably make it to 150 (which I did), but that he felt it would be a hard weight for me to maintain (which it is). I do like to stay in the 150's b/c that's where I'm most comfortable, but he was right~150lbs is hard to hold for an extended period of time. So, does being 153 or 159 make me unsuccessful? No Way! I'm happy and proud that at 3+yrs post op I'm still maintaining my weightloss and my health! Congratulations to you on being a success and on your continuing success!!!!!

My surgeons goal was 150-160 so I picked 155, when I hit 155 I decided I wanted 100lbs lost from surgery go I changed to 152... I saw the NUT to learn about maintenace eating and she said to go for 145. I went for a consultation with a PS, in our conversation I mentioned I didnt want to be 'too small' I just wanted the extra flub gone - he said ideally I should weigh 145-155 to get the post-PS result I wanted. I was easily able to hit the 145 and have been maintaining it since Feb - thats why I stuck to it... I will say its hard not to want to try and lose more (really wanting to lose the excess skin!) but I fear that if I lost more it would be a struggle to maintain it. Its my thinking that its best to sit where you can easily maintain then get to a weight that you are constantly battling to stay at.

Totally not a cop out, that's how goal setting is, you are constantly re evalutation your goals and sometimes they change, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. You're at  your original goal..SOOO awesome! But I understand wanting to take on the challenge of seeing if you can get a little lower, especially for that "cushion"..which realy might not hurt... so maybe work towards it but don't obsess over it trying to get there.  Definately don't "agonize" over it, you're at a great place! And you REALLY DESERVE to enjoy it!!  But it wouldn't hurt to say "hey, maybe I'll pick up a cycling class 3 times a week and perhaps gradually I'll get a little lower to attain that cushion room" ( or something, that's just an example).. but yeah, don't go crazy over it, celebrate you're amazing! We are about the same size... I had gotten down to 108 and was too small at that size so I parked it back up here.  My dr was very pleased today when I saw him that Im at a good weight now.  So yes you are at a perfect size.  I fluctuate between 122-125.  Im trying that wagoneer thing to balance my blood sugars and today so far I havent had a hypoglycemic attack... Take care, Jess

That is no cop out. If you are happy and feel good and are healthy going back to your original goal sounds perfect to me. Especially if you are able to maintain it easily with out stressing yourself.

Congratulations.
