Anyone had their stomach removed AFTER surgery?

I got a marginal ulcer in January and was put on Nexium 2 times per day and Sucralfate 3 times per day.  Apparantly I am one of the few who develope gastric production in their pouch.  Kept having the nausea, dry heaves and enormous swelling, so my surgeon went in to investigate.  I had 2 massive hernias, which he fixed all but one small hole (not enough good facia), and he said the ulcer was all healed and my RNY was working perfectly.

He took me off of the Sucralfate and down to 1 Nexium per day.  WIthin a week and a half I was back to the horrible pain and feeling like my guts were being ripped inside out.  He did a Gastrin Serum last week and will let me know in two weeks if he intends to remove my stomach completely.  It is my understanding that only 1% - 2% of people will get this complication.  The high Gastrin keeps your stomach ulcerated.

Anyone else experience this?  If so, how does the RNY work after your stomach is removed?  Any feed back will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kim

WOW, sorry about this.  I hope you're getting relief from the pain.

I've never heard of it.  How does it work without a stomach?

Several months ago someone was having terrible trouble with her stomach and posted about having it removed on the main board... You might want to put your post up there and she might respond. She was on the board a lot but I can't remember her name...

I'm not a Dr by any means, but I do remember when my surgeon was going over the surgery with me, she said the new pouch is so small we may as well go without it.  The biggest reason she gave for the pouch was that stomach tissue is very strong and makes for good strong connections.  If it's not there, then the food will just go from your esophogus to your small intestive right?  It's just one less place for food to get stuck.  :)

I also had a neighbor that had her entire stomach removed because of cancer.  She was able to eat just fine.  We compared notes after my surgery and it turned out our eating habits were quite similar.  So it may turn out that things won't change too much for you.  At this point, your source of pain would be gone and that would be a benefit!

Good luck to you.  Make sure to write down all of your questions for the next time you see the Dr!

I know a lady who has lived without a stomach for years. She never had WLS, just had some other problem and needed it removed. She has to watch her diet and but most people would never know she's stomach-less. I hope you feel better soon!

well, ,technically, yes. My original rny was 10/94. Ihad noe marginal ulcer after another. But then, I had had regular ulcers all my life, since my teens.

When my staple line disrupted. I asked them to remove the remnant, because it was a bag of scars from a lifetime of ulcers. They did (that was 2000), and have not had any MU since.

I don't miss it, except I work a lil harder to keep my B12 up

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Thank you all for the input and well wishes.  It has been quite helpful emotionally.  Anything to get rid of the source of this pain and nausea will be extremely welcome!  THis board is a life-saver!

I had some of my stomach removed. I had my first "mini" bypass in 2003. Because of some major complications, in 2005 they went in and completely removed the pouch that was created in 2003, and redid the bypass using some of the remant stomach from the first bypass.
