Disappointment & Tears...

Snacking and grazing will rip your diet apart...the scale will stop moving and you'll feel just like I felt when I stood on the scale today and in read 175lbs.  You could have knocked me over with one finger.  How could it read so much? When I weighed myself at home it was nowhere's close to this scale. I was devastated, I just wanted to run away and hide.  I was even more upset when the Dr. told me he had hoped that I would have lost another 30lbs. just kill me now.  So at 18 months post-op will I lose anymore?  Am I done?  Should I just crawl in my hole now and die? I have decided to go back to the basics...nothing goes in my mouth that I don't weigh or write down in my food journal.  I plan to get back into my exercise regiment in the morning...instead of 3 - 4x's a week it will not be 7 days a week.  Overkill! Maybe, I've got to get myself together and be successful. I've come to far to stop now.  Any suggestions and comments are welcome.

don't beat yourself up.....these things happen.  Go back to what you know and you will feel better.  Make sure your calorie count is in line with your exercise plan so that you don't put your body into starvation mode and stall everything.  Go back to your support group if you haven't already......it didn't take us 1 year to put on the weight and it won't take 1 year to get it off.....no matter what people say. Put one foot in front of the other and things will fall into place.  I have faith in you, so have faith in yourself...... Have a great evening..... Anjanette

I'm so sorry for your disappointment. I believe that you do have the desire and I know you have the tool to get your where you want to be. Dream and believe and act. You'll get there.

Don't be upset, just sit down and think about what caused you to overeat. When you did overeat, what did the foods consist of? How much of the foods were eaten, obviously grazing will do you more harm then actually planning your meals and sitting down to enjoy them. How much water are you getting a day? If you are serious about your goal, the first thing I would do is get your BMR tested at your local gym (Online calculators are fine but you need more detail report). Find out how far you can push the limit with your nutrition. I preach this everyday and hope more people understand what I am trying to inform them about.  There are no such thing as a good food or a bad food (It's a myth), the way we eat them and how much of them we consume is what makes them either good for us or bad (The body will convert all foods into glucose regardless if it is a donut or a chicken breast, the speed at which the body does this is what put us in fat storage mode, or fat burning mode.). I am sure there will be someone out there that will argue this point but I am a person who always ask to present the medical references to back your claim. There are too many studies supporting the data that the biochemistry of the body (Emotions, Hormones, Organs) is the main culprit when addressing obesity. If anyone thinks the pouch magically causes weight loss definitely need a better understanding of how the body works, the weight loss after surgery came solely from a calorie deficit and the lack of absorption of calories in comparison to calories out.  The only way to lose fat is by creating a calorie deficit, this involves knowing your BMR and never eating over it.  There are so many factors in play that may have caused your weight stall, but don't worry about it, research what happen, how can you readjust and plan a nutrition plan that is right for your likings and that you can live with.  Good luck!  Tomorrow is a new day.

Thanks, James...even before WLS I was a M&m's, Snicker's, Turkey Hoagie, fried chicken wings stress eater. When we have WLS we sometimes forget that "You Are What You Eat."  You put junk in and you're going to get junk out.  My stall and weight gain I know is my own fault and just a not too soon reality checkto snap me back. I have been trying the "Wagon Plan" and found that when I added more fiber to my diet I was not hungry and didn't have the need to "CHEAT ON MYSELF."  During the summer and especially since its been hot, I have tendency to retain fluid...that means I need to increase my fluid intake.  A problem that I have struggle with since WLS.  I know what I have too do...I just don't what my WL to stop and to be a failure because of doing something so stupid.

How do you get this BMR test? I am so interested. I have been asking and asking at what point( I am 3 years post op) do we know what calories we can eat and what we absorb. I have always been so frustrated at the lack of info out there on this subject. Even my surgeon has no idea what to tell me.

a few months ago when frustrtaed at a 10 lbs weight gain I had.. choose to get with a program of exercise 5 days a week. writing down and caluclating calories.. I firmly believe calories in..and calories out.but sugar was something i choose to limit.

I made sure i had a deficite of at least  500 calories a day. I lost 7 lbs in 29 days. I was so proud./.notice i said  "was"proud..well i found out I am pregnant.. so i have gained and its a pity party. BUT i am back again to say..even pregnant I am going to chart my food and get my but exercings again. one month of eating myslf to death and no exercise has left me fat and miserable. no more.

thanks for your post and info.

You've had a shock, you've been knocked down... BUT...you are not knocked out of this game.  You seem to know why you've had the weight gain, you know what's needed to address this issue. I say, now you've 'seen the light' so to speak, be kind to yourself.  Do not allow this to push you into the yoyo reaction type of actions that are not sustainable. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and take the journey one step at a time.  Good for you for realising what is going on and not hiding your head in the sand until the gain becomes 100 pounds.  You have faced up to reality - sometimes it stinks, but you have the right attitude to 'make it work' for you. hugs,

You are only out of the game if you choose to be.  Based on your post, however, it sounds like you're willing to fight and work for what you want.  My advice: 1.  Get your BMR tested - another poster suggested this and I agree.  In essence, this will tell you how many calories your body needs just to function every day.  It's like figuring out how many miles-per-gallon your car gets, except it's for your body.   2.  Use your BMR results to set a daily calorie goal w/ a 500-1000 per day calorie deficit.  At that deficit level, you should lose 1-2 pounds per week.   3.  Start keeping a daily food journal.  Free journals are available online at www.fitday.com, www.sparkpeople.com, www.thedailyplate.com.  Keep track of everything you put in your mouth!  This will help keep you accountable for your choices and it'll help you make sure you stick with your daily calorie goals.   4.  If you already exercise, bump it up and/or change up your routine.  If you are not exercising, start!  Even walking 30 minutes a day would be fantastic, and you can break that up into smaller increments if that works better for you (10 minutes 3 times per day).  Exercise really helps because it burns calories and helps keep our metabolisms burning a bit higher.

You've hit a bump in the road - do not allow it to derail you from your goal.  If you want it and are willing to work for you, success can and will be yours!!!

Good luck on your continuing journey -

Kellie

I can sympathize.  I am off work for the summer and since June 1 I had gained 5 lbs!!  A wake up call to me that I had better get it together!!  I would do like you and graze, graze, graze.  Not necessarily "bad" foods but way too much of them and way too often.  I also wasn't balancing my carbs and my protein.  Since Tuesday I have been on the "Wagon Plan".  It has worked great for me.  I have hardly any hunger at all and already much more energy.  Last week I would get up at 7:00am, take a nap in the afternooon, and go to bed at 10:00pm.  An example, last night I got up at 7:00am, did NOT take a nap, and didn't go to bed until 11:00pm!!  Remarkable for me!! This is the plan that is working for me.  Whatever you decide to do for you to get back on track I wish you much success and encouragement!! I know you can get back on track--I did, and you can too!!  I couldn't resist that phrase--it sounds like a Nutri-System commercial!!!  Now if I could just have that "smokin' hot body"!!!!  I may have it someday but you'll never be able to find it for all the excess skin!!! Have a great day!! Robin
