Something i think we all already knew - but heres the proof in the SF/FF pudding: Study shows value of food diary in losing weight (duh)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Keeping a food diary -- a detailed account of what you eat and drink and the calories it packs -- is a powerful tool in helping people lose weight, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

The study involving 1,685 middle-aged men and women over six months found those who kept such a diary just about every day lost about twice as much weight as those who did not.

The findings buttressed earlier research that endorsed the value of food diaries in helping people lose weight. Companies including Weigh****chers International Inc use food diaries in their weight-loss programs.

"For those who are working on weight loss, just writing down everything you eat is a pretty powerful technique," Victor Stevens of Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research in Portland said in a telephone interview.

"It helps the participants see where the extra calories are coming from, and then develop more specific plans to deal with those situations," said Stevens, who helped lead the study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The technique also helps hold dieters accountable for what they are eating, Stevens said.

The study involved people from four U.S. cities: Portland, Oregon; Baltimore, Maryland; Durham, North Carolina; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Their average weight loss was about 13 pounds (6 kg). But those keeping food diaries six or seven days a week lost about 18 pounds (8 kg) compared to 9 pounds (4 kg) for those not regularly keeping a food diary.

The average age of people in the study was 55.

They were asked to eat less fat, more vegetables, fruit and whole grains, exercise 180 minutes a week mostly by walking, attend group meetings, and keep a detailed food diary.

Blacks made up 44 percent of the people in the study. The researchers noted that blacks Americans have a higher risk than whites for conditions linked to obesity including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"Keeping a food diary doesn't have to be a formal thing. Just the act of scribbling down what you eat on a Post-It note, sending yourself e-mails tallying each meal or sending yourself a text message will suffice," Dr. Keith Bachman, another Kaiser Permanente expert, said in a statement.

The Will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Interesting to read, and my mom has been trying to get me to do this for years! With the daily plate it really isn't all that difficult, and almost fun!

I have been journaling for over 4 years now.  And it really does help and make a difference.  When I decided to have surgery I finally listened and started the food journaling and have been doing it ever since.  I am afraid to stop.  LOL.  I think it helps me stay focused and accountable.   Nice article.  Thanks for sharing. I totally agree!  I'm proof!  I did the 5 DPT back in February-ish...with 10 pounds to lose...The 5DPT got me back on track, but I could not stabilize my weight until I began journaling regularly and have been ever since (lost my ten lbs too!)  Recently I took a break when I had a ton of company in and out...and just had no time for it...But EVERYONE is gone again and it's all about ME again! LOL  I tend to want to "cheat" myself when I am not holding myself accountable....but then I think about the scale which I only weigh once a week at the most!  I hate feeling obsessed with everything that has to do with my weight! I try to live as normal as possible...But journaling REALLY keeps me in check and I LOVE the control I have over gaining and losing.  It seems so easy now...It's not easy, but it can be if I have the will to do it.  I have to admit...most of the time...I just don't want to try so hard...I just want to maintain... On top of all that...I was sick with anemia and given 2 months bed rest ...(Who me?  yeah right)  But I did have to quit working out and taking walks and any cardio at all.  When you go from active to nothing, you have to cut back eating or you will gain weight!  So for the last 4 months I have really struggled to stay near 1200-1400 calories and then slowly add some back as I began exercise again...Not too fast or I gained!  Journaling helped me work it out to a near science...But it's still hard and still challenging at times...and being patient and realizing how slow things move can be trying....But yep...It works!
