Vitamin A and D

I just wanted to remind everyone to get their lab tests for Vitamin A and Vitamin D.  My surgeon's office doesn't check this so when I went for my 3 year checkup last Sept., I asked for the tests.  My A was below range and my D was at the lower end of the range.  I have increased my A and D.  I have to get my A checked every 3 months and I am having trouble getting it up.  I am now taking 50,000 IU of dry A every day.

Hi, did you notice any side affects when your A and D were low?

No, but I read afterwards that if you are deficient in A that it can cause itchy skin.  I have that but don't know if the low A caused it.  It also can cause night blindness.  I don't see very well when I drive at night.

I have all of these! I have been having a hard time with them too. Do ya'll have any suggestions about getting these in my system like yesterday?
Thankyou! Thankyou!

I would not take Vitamin A or D without first getting a lab test to check your levels.  Then if your levels are below the mid range, I would supplement with dry A and dry D.

A deficiency first shows up as night blindness, then immune system seems to keep dragging, then the skin issues

D in the worst case = rickets (osteomalacia) or soft bones, the next step aftre osteoporosis (porous bones). It might manifest as vague aches in joints or bones. Or wiating long enough might manifest as a fracture, on a minor fall, like a simple trip onto carpet. One of my friends rolled over in bed and fractured 3 ribs. Can we see he skipped labs for too long?

the list of what it helps grows and grows and in the vit D world (see www.vitaminDcouncil.com I think), levels below 70 on the D 25 hydroxy test are not considered therpeutic for any of the OTHER benefits beyond imediata rescue of bones.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

All my fat soluable vitamins were low because no one ever told me that Vit A, E, D and K have to be taken in dry form after RNY!  I know now and take the RIGHT ones now.  Vitamin A also helps you absorb iron in natural foods!  So I take the dosage you take and my iron is up along with taking the RIGHT Iron supp too!  I'm having very achy joints recently though and I am taking all my vits faithfully...It's a new symptom...Not sure what it is all about.  But I get labs soon...so we shall see....

Anita, I think the achy joints can be from low levels of D.  I would make sure that the docs get your D tested.
