the sequel to my last post-

It's been 5 hours since I went to the gym to do my classes, saw my weight, and went MIA. I handed the passes for the classes back to the front desk and said "I don't feel well" (which was true! I was depressed).

I've given it some thought (and a nap), read your replies so far, and decided it would be doing myself a diservice by declaring this effort a failure ad stop trying. So in the meantime I've been to costco, loaded up on 3 grm carb 27 gram protein per serving protein powder, a case of egg beaters, and a 5 lb bag of chicken and I'm back in the game! In a few minutes I'm gonna head to the gym..again, missed the classes but I found this great schedule online on how to go from couch potato to running three miles, it takes two months to build up to. So I think I'll go try day one of that!

Just for accountability purposes, next Sunday I'm going to post my weeks calorie totals, (which will include the net cals after my workout cals are subtracted) just for accountability purposes. I'm going to do one more thing. I'm not going to weigh or measure for this one week trial. I'm going to keep going to my two gym classes a day plus my uphill treadmill climb (in prep to hike the 2nd largest mountain in the rockies in sept). keep my calories around 1,200 (total, not net) and try my hardest to keep my carbs under 20! We'll see if THIS brings results. If not, I'll tweak it again. I've been tracking food and workouts for a week, I'll keep tweaking for 3 more weeks, if STILL nothing, then I'm going to go see my surgeon, ..or at least my pcp and see if there's something wrong with my thyriod or something. I'll have a month worth of records to show them, before I give up on this and seek professional medical help for it I want to be able to have a 1 month record to show them that says "see, I'm doing everything "right" what's wrong?"  I'll get this right?! If I keep trying I MIGHT lose the weight, if I give up, it's a certainty that I won't. those are my only choices as I see it! I'll be sticking around here for inspiration.

thanks guys

The REALLY good news is? I got through this "defeat" without turning to food or alcohol! I'm amazing! lol Leslee Leslee

I think this all sounds great Leslee except I do worry about your extremely low carb intake.  I know I am very sensitive to carbs to but I find if I limit my carbs to nonstarchy veggies, soy milk, low fat cheese/yogurt (no added sugar also) and low glycemic fruits like berries (only) that I lose ok even at 50-70 net carbs.  You need some carbs to feel clear-headed and for workout purposes.. if I do the 20 or less my workouts.. well they suck.  And I hate for you to let that discourage you.  Remember the average person (nonop) takes in around 200-250 carbs a day. Even at a net (which means subtracting fiber as I am sure you know) of 50-70 carbs is considered very low carb and not putting you into ketosis.  Yes, you aren't hungry in ketosis but does it ever make you feel strange and less peppy for a while till your body gets used to it and for me that is weeks and I cannot sustain that for very long.. i get so moody and irritable.  Just food for thought but wanted to tell you how proud I am of you not giving up and staying accountable!  Good for you!!!!

I'm so proud of you not giving up and turning to that demon alcohol or food either. I totally understand the reaction to all that crap.  I suggest you do one more thing...Take your measurements, bust, waist, hips (and legs and arms too if you have a mind to) and write them down. You can do it once a week or once a month but take your measurements every so often so you know where you're losing.  what might happen is this: You might start building muscle (might?...psh..you will) And because muscle weighs more than fat, you're not going to see the scale drop the way you want, right away. You'll build muscle and lose the volume...Take your measurements so you KNOW you're losing size.  Keep up the good fight. We're with you!
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I'm glad you posted earlier and I read all the great replies you received.  I'm putting all that to heart as you are.  I've been so discouraged these past two days for the exact same reasons as you.  I decided to give it all I've got and get off these creeping pounds and darn if I didn't gain two pounds just like you did.  I was good on the exercise, water and food and I just knew I was going to lose.  I'm having issues with hormones that I'm trying to regulate and insomnia issues I'm working with my dr on so I thought those might have something to do with my gain.  It is so frustrating and I refuse to allow the pounds to come back on after my 3 years of hard work. I'm going to take to heart the advice you've been given and hang in there.  I'm keeping my food diary and my sleep diary - that is a huge issue for me right now - and I had decided like you if I still am not losing in the next couple weeks to contact the nut at my surgeon's office for review and advice. I'm sorry this is happening to you but I'm very relieved to know I'm not alone.  You know we always have those thoughts of being the one the surgery will not work for long term.  Watching the pounds creep back and the clothes getting tight AND doing all I know to do is scary.  I'm being accountable with a non-op friend and she's losing and I'm not.  I thought since I had the wls I would certainly have an easy time dropping pounds.  Every waking moment I'm obsessed with what is happening with my weight right before my eyes.  I'm so afraid.  But, I can keep the work up, I like what you said about if you give up you certainly won't lose the weight.  I have to remember that.

Yeah, I think that's the best thing we can do..is keep doing what we know to do, AND especiallly keep very good record of it, so we know exactly what we took in and compare it to exactly what we worked off, so IF we are not losing in a few weeks we have something to show our dr. Instead of going in and saying "I'm not losing weight" and him asking "well what have you been doing?" and saying "eating less calories, more protein and exercising more" he may be inclined to think we're just not doing as good as we thought we were. But if we have a record we can print out (which you can on thedailyplate) we can bring that into him and say "take a look, I have been meticulous about my record, and here it is, now what? " But yes, this first week is the hardest...cause I'm not used to tracking what I eat, or working out a lot, so it feels like a LOT Of hard work with no payback As I get more in the habit of these new lifestyle changes the time will probably pass faster so the results won't seem as slow perhaps. We'll see! Leslee

You are exactly right.  If you keep trying you will find that perfect mix for you that works and get that weight off, but if you give up it certainly isn't going anywhere.  Thanks for the reminder.  Sometimes the simplest things are what you need to hear to keep trucking along.

Leslee, You hang in there. I know you are trying really hard and I believe in the next week or two you will start to see weight loss. Also what Dawn said about measuring is a great idea, not all progress is measured by the scale alone.

Hey Leslee! You picked yourself up and dusted off and I'm so happy you're ready to keep fighting the good fight!!!!! Do you have PCOS or suffer from carb intolerance? Just wondering b/c with my hectic workout schedule my body definitely required some carbs to burn to maximize my results and when I go to low I don't see the results I desire. I do not have a carb intolerance though, so just something to think about if you're going to keep doing those heavy duty workouts. I look forward to hearing how things are going for you in the next few weeks!!!!! You're working so hard at it so I KNOw you will have good results soon!!!!!!!!
