Hi Everybody!! You guys are so wonderful. I know I posted before about loosing this 20#, but I was waundering if someone could tell me a way to do it with hypoglycemia. Just about EVERYTHING I eat affects my sugar levels in a very bad way. I realy cant go back to my surgeon because I dont have any insurance so if anyone knows of some breakfast, lunch or snacks that I can try to help with this weightloss pls let me know. Thank you so much for your kindness and GREAT advise. Misty

I am borderline hypoglycemic..If you can stick with proteins and veggies, salads etc you should be ok. also eat small every 2-3 hours. Since I recently discovered the hypogycemia my doc said to do this and I havent had one attack since. he told me it was to much carbs/sugar/crackers/chips etc all the food i really shouldnt eat anyway. i also eat atkins protein bars. since changing up my food I have also lost 5 pounds in a few weeks and I was at my goal! Hope that helps. i am not an expert in this area so i am sure others will chime in

Ahh.. yes.. hypoglycemia.  It's fun to fall face first into the floor every day or so, isn't it? I've been hypoglycemic since way before surgery (at 13, I was volunteering at the hospital, had an episode, and they found my sugars to be 30) and it got worse post-op (and way worse while pregnant with my daughter). The key is to know that protein is the slowest to break down into blood sugar.. so if you eat a high dose of protein every 2-3 hours, it will help keep your levels even.  Carbs, especially simple white ones, are evil to hypoglycemics.. you need some, but you need to make sure they are balanced out with the protein (try to get as much protein in each meal compared to carbs.. don't have 70g carbs and 10g protein in a meal for example.. try to keep them even) and that they are complex carbs (whole wheat, flax, etc.). I live on greek yogurt.. it's very high in protein for the amount of carbs (1c ==130 cals, 22g protein, 9 grams carbs) and it's pretty tasty with enough splenda.  "Flat Out Wraps" are a great source of *good* carbs and protein that you can have with eggs bacon, and cheese for a breakfast wrap, or with other stuff for lunch and dinner..  My protein drinks are pretty low in carbs, too. If you need more info, or ideas, lemme know.  Hypoglycemia really really sucks.

I think the longest I go before I have to eat is three hours. You might check the last accountability thread for the foods that I'm eating and the times..You can adjust it and do just the protein parts if you want to keep your calories down.  Breakfast: protein 26 to 34 Snack: protein 13 grams Lunch: protein 24 grams Snack: protein 8-20 grams  Dinner: protein 26-30 grams.  Dessert: usuall protein but sometimes a serving of popcorn which is nothing but carbs.  I'm a bit unusual because I am under weight so the calories are too much for someone who wants to lose weight but the protein is right in there.  For the early day snacks I almost always have a 1 oz cheese stick and wrap it with a piece of lunch meat. Lunch can be 4 ounces of cooked shrimp with ****tail sauce and a protein snack in teh afternoon can be a SF pudding cup or yogurt cup with Textured Vegetable Protein or a protein bar..
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I've read all these posts with interest because I have the same problem with hypoglycemia. It's hard to lose weight when I need to because I have to eat so often, every 2 hours or so. And if I increase my exercise I have to eat more to get my blood sugar level back up. Thanks everybody for your advice.

After 13 yrs, I finally figured out it was white carbs. So far, a few bites of rice or pasta hasn't done it, but more than 3 bites of potato or white breads and 3 hrs later, I'm down.

So, I'd say, stick with protein foods, meat, cheese... some like to wrap meat arund a cheese stick, for example. I put 2 in ziplok these days. Or a low carb (mine is 2g whole bar--i usually eat half) protein bar. I am a huge fan of ziplok for portio control. LOL

But noooooooo potato (my #1 fave food) and no bread (#2), and I stay steady. If I mis caclulate, I carry PB crackers to correct. Glucose just puts me back on the roller coaster.

I never sw a pattern until I went carb free for 6 months, then added carbs back in. I finally, fnially learned the exact triggers.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

I had my surgery 8/18/04 and about 18 mos. out, started w/the hypoglycemia, too.  Also, I'm going through menopause now and have gained 15-20 pounds even though I'm not eating differently and exercise every day!  Anyway, I, too, was worried about having to eat during my exercise to keep my sugar up.  This week at the grocery store, in the diabetic section, I found some glucose tablets.  When you feel your sugar dropping, I chew one and it really works!!  They're only 15 calories as opposed to 200 for the crackers I was told to eat!!  I have no idea why my doctors have never mentioned it - but I'm hoping it'll be a step in the right direction!  Good luck!!

Hugs,
Connie
