Can dumping get worse over time?
I am over a year and a half out from RNY. I was always a big dumper at the beginning. Then it seemed to get better and stabilized by a year out. In the last month or so, it seems to be getting worse rather than better. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it just a matter of cutting back further on carbs or is it a precursor to something worse like hypoglycemia or something? Any ideas?

I don't know if it can get worse, but I would think that it could. I sure hope so, because it almost takes an act of God for me to dump. I want to be a dumper!
It would keep me on the straight and narrow!

I'm 2.5 years out and "dump" nearly every day..sometimes when I least expect it, like over refried beans last night (but..I had a LOOOTTT of cheese in it), I was nauseous and sweaty for my exact 30 minutes of dumping, then I felt perfectly normal again. I RARELY throw up, I can count on one hand the number of times I threw up since surgery, and always it was from something that just got "stuck" going down. But dumping, at least a mild form, I have pretty often. But I think I've grown used to it and have just come to accept and expect it. How often do I hear my husband say "are you going to be sick?" or "Are you sick?" or "gonna lay down for half an hour?" I've just realized, I don't know that I NEED to dump. I'm doing the 5 day pouch test, which takes you back to basics...if I get sick and dump on protein drinks (low carb) and eggs..then somethings wrong with me, as that shouldn't cause dumping, most of the time. I'm hoping I'll have 5 days of no dumping so that IF/WHEN I dump afterwards it will be more extreme (or seem more extreme) and I will hopefuly be more opt to avoid the foods that make me dump. But yeah, sometimes something will make me dump, then not the next time. But there are some things that will almost always make me dump if I eat a stomach full of it, anything high in fat and or sugar, is pretty much a guarantee. I have a niece who is almost 4 years out of surgery and she still dumps on occasion. Notice what you're eating and see if you can find a correlation, and if the "right" foods are making you dump, maybe talk to your dr about it. Soft low fat proteins when well chewed shouldn't make you dump. Everyone is different. Good luck.

Leslee,
I feel much better now that you've answered. This is the same thing that happens to me. I can always trace it back to something high in carbs that I ate. And it happens nearly every day after drinking milk or eating something full of carbs. As long as it isn't a sign of something bad deveoping, its a good thing. It makes me watch my carbs and stick to proteins like I'm suppose to.
My diet get boring sometimes so I tend to try something new, usually high in carbs and it puts me into a dump -- fast heart beat and tiredness mostly. Sometimes diarrea.
I never throw up anymore. That happened a few times way at the beginning. I've learned to always chew, even cottage cheese. That seems to stop that little problem.
You're right though. I know how to avoid dumping. It's just that head hunger that keeps trying to convince me otherwise!

Milk gets me almost every time, put that milk with my absolute FAVORITE Life cereal? And I dump WAY bad! SO bad I just don't touch that combination anymore. But yes, it does encourage me to only eat a few bites of something that makes me dump, and to stay with protein and veggies...I never dump on that combination.

It comes in spells for me. Sometimes I can eat just about anything and get away with it, and other times, a little carrot will make me sick. I've wondered a lot if some of it comes from just not eating it very often, instead of it having to do with WLS. I just can't imagine what a Big Mac would do to me, but it would have probably made me sick even if I never had WLS, after going so long without having one. I do remember liking them at one time, though. I bet the fast food places lost a lot of revenue when I decided to change.
I am sitting in front of my computer at work reading this thread wishing I could crawl under my cubicle counter and pass out. That is how bad my dumping is this morning. Tuesday night I cooked supper for the family and thought "I'll try a few bites of what I cooked for them"
Two bites of casserole made with ground round, medium egg noodles etc..... I can NOT eat ANY pasta of any sorts. About 30 minutes later, 7pm, I looked at my husband and told him I was going to pass out. I went and got in the bed and came to at 9:25. Felt like hell.
I need to to the 5 day pouch test. I am 23 months out yesterday and feel like crap. I guess it is back to two meals of protein shakes and some "food" for supper.....

That has got to be tough. I love to cook and my family comes over to eat at least 2 or 3 times a week. I make lots of casseroles and have all the cookbooks. Have you tried wheat pasta instead of white? It's not like it used to be - most people can't even tell the difference. I wonder if you'd be able to tolerate it better. I've used all kinds, including egg noodles, and it worked really well. My nut said look for the kind that has at least 4 grams of fiber, and I can usually find some that has 5 or 6 grams. I made lasagna this week with Healthy Harvest noodles, found at WalMart. Bless your heart. I know a lot of pasta's not good for anybody, but I'd hate not being able to eat it at all.
