Maui friend with a question....

Aloha Grads....I have never come into this forum before, but since I'm almost two years out I thought I'd check it out. I usually go to the OFF (Over fifty forum) where there is a LOT OF activity and good friendships.

I have had a wonderful experience after WLSl....having gone from 319 to 155. Actually my goal was 175 (I'm 5' 11" tall) and I'm 20 lbs below that and quite skinny, but my bariatric doc says I'm "a skinny woman but a healthy woman."

Recently I have had a couple of "episodes" where I eat somethiing and then am sick for hours afterwards..throwing up even water. Then it passes. I never got sick before...or rarely..and when I did....I would throw up a little and it was over. This new thing is HOURS of nausea, vomiting and pain. I'm wondering if anyone has had problems with gall bladder 2 years out from surgery. My bariatric doc has scheduled me for a CT scan, and I see my surgeon in Honolulu next week. Seems curious to be having problems this far out.

Any suggestions would be so very much appreciated. I am so very blessed to have had this surgery which has turned my life upside down. I am now an involved person....doing things instead of watching the world go by.

I'm happy to meet you all...and hope to become part of your group.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

I've heard of people having gall bladder problems after years have passed since WLS. In fact, I got the results of my physical today, and some kind of liver enzyme is up which suggests I'm going to have problems with my gall bladder. I said, "WTH? I took that stupid little pill for 6 months!" And then they said sometimes that doesn't work, and a lot of people have gall bladder problems that never had WLS, so they may not even be connected. I don't have any symptoms (yet), so we'll just wait and see. It sounds like you've had a lot of success since your WLS. If you do end up having surgery on your GB, hopefully it won't keep you down for very long! Welcome to the grads board.

I remember someone (thinking it was a speaker at one of my Nutrition classes) saying "you better hope you have a surgeon that takes your gall bladder with your RNY, because they cause nothing but serious trouble later...That always stuck in the back of my mind...But I'm one that say's "if it ain't broke, leave it alone!"  I never thought about it again til your post. I had my surgery 4 1/2 years ago...I'm about to turn 44...Time flies when you are finally enjoying life! LOL Your symtoms sound just awful....I hope your doc gets to the bottom of things...You look wonderful and vibrant!! Hawaii...How awesome for you! Get well soon so you can enjoy yourself again! Hugs Welcome to the grads...

Same age and same surgery month. I turn 50 this year and had my surgery on July 11, 2006... I haven't had any issues with my gallbladder but that means exactly nothing. It could happen to anyone..

We're headed to Oahu in October for my daughter's wedding. Very nice to meet you!

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Before Surgery: 214
Highest Weight: 240

Hello, nice to meet you too. Sorry that you are experiencing problems and hope the doctor can figure out whats going on and remedy it.

I know gall bladder problems can occur to anyone and anytime and we as postops have an increased risk for them. Myself I have had gallstones since before surgery, Doc did not remove my gallbladder and they are still there not causing a problem.

Hope you feel back to normal soon.

Hi Karen, I am new to this board myself.  I am always on the NJ Board.  It will be a year next month since I had my surgery.  About 4 months after the surgery I had a Ultra Sound done of my Stomach, Kidneys, Heart, you name it, and they found (1) tiny little gallstone, they said it was the size of a tip of a pencil. My Doctor told me not to worry about it until I start feeling sick like you have explained in your post.  I heard that gall bladder problems are very common after WLS surgery.  But being that you are already being tested, if there is a problem it is something that can be corrected.  So think positive, and I pray that everything goes well for you.  Let us know how you are doing.
