I Love Dr. Oz
Do any of you watch Dr. Oz on the Discovery Health channel, or read his books? He says to measure your waist and not look at the scale. I really like this idea, since my waist is proportionately small. A woman's waist should be 32" or less, and a man's waist should be 35" or less. He says big thighs never killed anybody. (Hooray for Dr. Oz!) I'm reading his book "Your Owner's Manual" and it goes through all your systems in layman's terms, and then he tells you what to do to keep your parts working. He measures everything in real age (eat fish 3 times a week and you'll decrease your age by so many years). There's a workout routine towards the back of the book, which made me sore, so I think it must be effective. He says to walk every day for 30 minutes, along with some extra things every day. On weekends he says to walk an hour, and finish every workout with stretching and yoga. We're supposed to eat an ounce of nuts, a piece of dark chocolate (yippee), and drink half a glass of red wine every day. I can live with all that. Thanks to everybody's good wishes on my new grandbaby. Little Luke came into the world Monday at 3:00 P.M., a little whop-sided and bruised from a forceps delivery, but he's shaping up nicely. And what a set of lungs, you could hear him all over the hospital. They had their first night at home last night, and nobody slept, they were scared to stop watching him in case something happened to him.
I've been impressed with some of Dr. Oz's programs I've seen on DH. Haven't read the books yet but hope to in the future.
Congrats on your grandson.
Kathy

Love Dr. Oz! I haven't seen him on the Discovery channel; I didn't even know he has a show. When is it? I've just seen him as a regular on Oprah, and I love his down-to-earth way of explaining things to normal nitwits like me! I haven't read any of his books--can't believe I haven't--I'd like the one about aging well (or staying young or something like that!).
Always,
Jo
I love him too! Haven't read any of his books but I was just at the books store and thought I need to pick one of his books up...(Couldn't decide which one) bu****ch all the shows he's on...I'm a DHC junkie. I watch The Learning Channel and Discovery Channels all the time and record stuff if I can't be there! Just finished learning about Cuddlefish and Why alligators are going blind in Brazil! And I watched the smallest woman have a baby....LOL I dunno why such things interest me! Tonight I watching Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth"...
My brain is not happy if it's not being a sponge! I think I'm half crazy sometimes...OOPs sorry sidetracked there! But YES! I love Dr OZ...I wish I could meet him. The only trouble is that sometimes things that work for regular people don't work for us with WLS....Especially when he talks about vits and nutrients...So careful there. Otherwise our families ARE regular people and we still need to take care of them...and what he says applies to them...so I love him anyway! LOL
I love DrOz... I have the books and watch the shows - he gives advise that is easy to follow in a way thats easy to understand... many things he has said I now follow. hes the best!

I like him a lot. I think Oprah is helping him have his own show (like she did Dr. Phil). I think Dr. Phil's success kind of ruined things, a lot of his shows now are getting a bit much. Over all I still think he's got some good advice. What is Dr. Oz's position on WLS? I know for sure that Oprah is very against it and makes that clear.

From what I've seen, Dr. Oz is usually supportive of WLS, when all else fails, of course. I was watching another show on the Discovery Health channel yesterday, a panel of doctors discussing obesity, and they kept talking about how 90-something percent of dieters fail, and 75% of people are successful after WLS. Some of the studies were 18 years post-op. So it was a little encouraging.
In my thirties I lost 100 pounds - in a healthy manner. I remember reading that very statistic (that 98 percent of people that lose over 100 pounds gain it back within 3 years) and I felt so screwed. I knew I wasn't the type to be that 2 percent! Sure enough I gained it back and then some. I think the medical establishment is starting to realize WLS is helping a lot of people keep weight off and not get the co-morbidities that were surely going to be their future.
