Fasting Blood Glucose Test and Dumping? - Question

My ob/gyn has me scheduled for a fasting blood glucose test, and I am concerned because I dump on sweets. I remember having to take one YEARS ago (pre-op) , and the stuff they give you to drink is like syrup.  Now I am afraid to take one because of how sick it might make me.

Anyone else who dumps done this post op?

They waived the requirement for me when I was pregnant because I'd had the RNY and the chances of my getting gestational diabetes were very low. I did have to take one recently due to some medical problems and I was sooooooo sick.  Bring a pillow if you are forced to do this so you can lay down.  Bleech!

When I first got pregnant my OB had me take this test at 8 weeks due to my family history.  I told him that I would get sick with it and would not have accurate results.  He insisted.  I did get sick but not as bad as I thought I was going to and failed the test.  My sugar was 205 at one hour. I saw my surgeon and told him that I had been referred to an endocrinologist (spelled wrong I think) for further testing.  He told me not to take the 3 hour test because these tests are not accurate aftr RNY.  The endocrinologist said she was going to treat me for gest. diabetes regardless since I would not take the test.  (She even threatened insulin shots.)  She made me test my sugar 7 times a day.  She wanted my fasting blood sugar to be 55 and one hour after meals she wanted it to be less than 110.  I was afraid to death to eat since I couldn't seem to get down to the 55 she wanted.  I found myself very sick all the time.  My sugar would get into the low 60's and I'd get the shakes.  My sugar after meals was usually in the 80's.  My new OB told me with numbers like that to eat what I wanted, when I wanted and we'd see what happened.  I never did develop GD although they treated me like I had. I've since learned from the post-op pregnancy board that there are alternatives to the glucose test and maybe you can investigate those.  For some reason my doctors wouldn't make the phone call from WV to NJ to talk to my surgeon so I was subjected to lots of extra monitoring.  The only advantage was I got to see my Alex every four weeks on ultrasounds. Good luck and check out the pregnancy board.  I don't post much there but it is awesome and full of information. Jennifier

Meagan and Jennifer - Thanks SO much! I think that I am going to just decline to take the test... I'll give my ob/gyn my surgeon's info, but he will never get him on the phone or anything.

Wow, Jennifer!! It sounds like you had the endo doc from you-know-where!!! Sugar in the 80's after eating?? It sounds like you were below normal most of the time without interference! Gee....

She was awful.  She kept telling me things I'd "never" eat again.  I told her not to worry because they wouldn't fit in my stomach anyway- like a whole baked potato and bread with dinner.  She said she wasn't concerned with what would fit, she was telling me what not to eat.  She did not understand my condition at all.

I've heard horror stories and told my PCP that I refuse to take the test because of my reaction to sugar and she agreed.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!
