Osteoporosis

I'm sure I can't be the only one out there with this problem.  I was always a good "milk drinker" and calcium consumer long before my RNY 4 years ago......never had a problem with calcium levels.  3 years ago a bone density test revealed I had developed osteopenia.  After increasing my calcium and D supplements, which by the way, I have taken religiously since my bypass, my levels came up and I thought I was out of the woods.  I just had a repeat bone density test done.......I am 56 years old......and I officially have osteoporosis with significant bone loss.  How can this be?  I eat a ton of calcium rich products as well as taking supplements every day.  Has anyone else out there had calcium absorption problems without any apparent reason?  Please share.  Joann

Vitalady has had a lot of issues with osteoporosis, including broken bones.  Since she's on the VitaTour right now, you might want to look at some of her old posts, she's written about it many times. Michele

I've just discoverd that my D is low and my PTH is high (bad, bad, bad) so I'm in the process of upping my D.  I've never had a bone density test, but I'm thinking I probably should sooner than later just to make sure. And yes, I've been religious with my supplements, too.

being a milk drinker back then doesn't save bones today,. some endos wil tell you it is just the massive wt loss. period. Manner doesn't matter. Astronauts lose 2% BMD per month when weightless, for example.

So how much of what kind of calcium and the same question for vit D. Are you taking K2?

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

ok, and I forgot to ass that eating calcium courses does you not good (but not bad) since if you COULD get it from food, you WOULD have gotten it from food.

Malabsorption covers:
protein
iron
calcum
A, D, E
B1
B6
B12
zinc
