Has anyone had to have B12 injections? My B was extremely low and I now have to have injections. I was exhausted ..........completely exhausted. Is it possible to feel better after just the first IM injection? How long did it take before it made you feel better?

Started out taking 1- 1000mcg injection since the week I had WLS in 2005. In 2007 I started 2 a week. I had been on B12 injections since my teens but once a month which did nothing for me, Once a week did nothing but twice a week is perfect. I am up at 8AM and don't get to bed to till midnight and other than recovering from pneumonia  right know I feel great. My surgeon told me WLS patients need injection plus 500 mg daily by mouth or sublingual rest of their life.. I can't do the sublinqual has sweetner I am allergic to but I do take them by mouth and obviously its working all my bloodwork is perfect.

Hi, My surgeon prescribed Nascobal for me.   One squirt in the nostril once a week and I'm good to go.  Taking it weekly helps to level out the B 12.  Once a month gives a surge then starts to level off during the month.  So that during the last of the month the levels are low again.  Hope you find what you need.  Yes, you can feel better soon after starting the program. My Dr gives me one anytime I want one-he checks my blood every 6 months.  I tried the Nascobal but it wasn't covered by insurance and is very expensive.  The good thing about taking B12 is that your body will get rid of the excess, so you can't overdose.  It can only be absorbed through the mucous membranes which is why the recommend the sublingual.  It is in my multivitamin, but I still take 2 pills SQ (under the tongue) 4xper week and my levels have been good for the last year.

I get both B1 and B12 injections. I was hospitalized for months for lack of them. The damage was and is pretty bad from having almost nothing in my system. After a year I am finally on monthly injections and yes I can feel the diffrence. I know a week or two before my "dose" I have to start taking a nap during the day. But I feel great for a couple of weeks after.

I had a B12 injection yesterday (my first).  My B12 was @ 157, where 200 is on the low end of the scale.  I am also very low in iron and iron saturation.  I have been completely exhausted for months, and am 7 years out from my RNY proximal (surgery 3/14/01).  I think this is the first year where I have had a COMPLETE blood/urinalysis panel, and also have kidney stones.  (I was told every 6 months that my blood test looked fine). I was prescribed Niferex for iron. I'm hoping to feel better soon.  I was also prescribed potassium citrate for kidney stones, but after reading the literature, I am afraid to take it.  I have re-gained 30 lbs. just in the past year (was holding steady for 6 years), and am extremely frustrated. I do have to add that I have been extremely stressed, and I'm sure that's not helping with the fatigue factor.  All of that said, I must say I do feel a bit better today.  Usually, I would spend every spare moment in bed, and just dragging myself to work was an effort.  Today, I actually have some energy (amazing).  Hope you're feeling better soon.

I do a B12 shot once a week.  I actually get the B12 from my vet.  It is much cheaper and the same stuff prescribed by the Dr.  The only thing is that I give it to my self verses having the Dr office do it.  I did not really feel anything until the 3rd week.  Now my levels are great - I feel great and have had no issues.  People crack up when I tell them I take the same stuff as my dog!   Hope you feel better soon! My surgeon's protocol is injections, and I'm fine with that.  Being a nurse, there was no problem giving them to myself, LOL!  I take 1000mcg (1cc) weekly.  Labs are great!  I also do Poly-Iron 150 and Vit. C (500mg) before bed on an empty stomach.  Labs are great!!

I had surgury in 2005.  Just last month had real problems with the B-12.  Have to now take a shot every two weeks and daily.  Keep your labs checked.  It will cause real problems for you.  I had to find that out the hard way.

Hello Darlene.   I had surgery July/2006 and I do the shots, B-12, 2 times a week. I just give them to myself, what a difference.. I know when I need it,  The B-12 , under the tongue and  are just not enough. Now if I could just remember to take the calcium...... Peggysue
