Alcohol
I am over 2 years post op and I haven't really drank since my surgery because I don't know what to drink. I love mixed drinks but they are loaded with sugars and I just can't do beer. Any suggestions? I always feel left out of the crowd when I can't sip a drink. I know I won't be drinking alot but would love to have a drink of choice.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I went with my company to a wine bar after work today. I drink, maybe once a month, and not much. I think you'll find there are a lot of people who have a drink now and then, whether they admit it or not. Just keep it all in moderation and go slow. Can you handle sugar at all? That will probably dictate what you can and can't drink.

I have the issue with sugar too. The only drink I have found I can tolerate since my RNY is vodka and orange juice (100% pure OJ). Just a little warning though... you will feel the effects of alcohol much quicker now since your WLS. Enjoy!

I can do a blended margarita...And I feel it really quick. What I do at home is make a smoothy out of ice and my SF Lemonade packet and toss a bit of tequilla in there..I did this last summer and at a barbeque or two we had here.
I do also have an occasional wine cooler. I'm sensitive to sugars and alcohol so I drink them very very slowly.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I attend 3 support meetings per month, and learn a lot of information on post op situations. True, some patients will dump on minimal sugars, so if sugars are a problem for you, I'd opt for "virgin" drinks. Secondly, one drink to a RNY patient is like 5 drinks to a non WLS person. So you'll get "tipsy" one one or two drinks easily. You'll feel somewhat normal in 20 minutes or so, and you may be tempted to have additional drinks. But keep in mind, although you fell sober, your blood alcohol is still elevated, and has not come back to normal. So if you get stopped driving after a few drinks while driving, you could easily be cited for driving while intoxicated. My surgeon has had a few patients involved in DUI tickets in CA, and another doctor on another forum recently told me that a another doctor in Japan where she lives, had 5 patients with tickets for driving while intoxicated. bariatriceating.com has a margareta mix and others too, that are sugar free. Its called "zilch". I mix it with water, ice and a little tequilla and its a yummy drink. You can make is less strong by not adding too much margaretta.

i have done ok with the following:
wine
bloody mary
and the other day i tried a cosmo, which is vodka, cointreau and cranberyy juice with lime, went ok but i prefer something less sweet.
good luck and drink very carefully, as the other posters said u feel it much faster after RNY so i stop after one, even if its tasting fine.
