You might want to talk to a nutrionist who deals with WLS for your specific body and size and weight you want to be and metabolism, and labs, age, activity, special needs, dietary concerns...etc Yep...there are too many things to factor into what your calories should be... If you want a general idea...Try these formulas at this site! It's a good start to get a basic idea... http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict -equation/ There are many calculators and resources at this page to help you get started on your own.  Good luck...

I've always heard the average is 100 calories for every pound you want to weigh. If you want to weigh 150, you should eat 1500 calories a day. And then add a few if you are really active. But we're all so different, so it's hard to say unless you have one of those metabolism tests. I've got a lot of muscle, and they tell me I burn another 300 calories or so every day just sitting at my desk, which is good for me because there's no way I can stick to 1250 calories a day to maintain my weight. :)
My nut says 1200 to maintain.

1200 to maintain?  Geesh, that sounds so low.  Before I had the surgery, I could maintain at 1800 a day.  Why do the calories super absorb with us now?  I've read on here from someone that each calorie is almost doubled for us now, as far as effect goes.   Is there any truth to this?

According to my nut, yup. Its actually quite doable for me. Im usually under the 1200. I dont know about the double calorie thing. Ill be curious to find out.

My NUT also says 1200 to maintain - I will say that my surgeon only bypasses around 80cm so I am on the 'low end'. However - my NUT also recommends patients to get a metabolism test once they are farther than 1 year out and at goal. I went and had one done and found my RMR is 1400, add in my daily acitivty (including 30 mins moderate exercise) and I burn over 1800 calories.  What they say is really just an 'average' based on their experience as to what works for people.  Not sure what the each calorie is almost doubled for us means - a calorie is a calorie as far as I know. Typically those with more bypassed do need to eat more to maintain due to the additional malabsorption.

I suggest a metobolism test. I had one called a med-gem at my nut's office. Alot of fitness centers also provide the test. You breathe into a tube for about 10  minutes. The test tells you about your metobolism. It also indicates how many calories neede to maintain and how many to lose. My weight loss zone is between 1300 1600 calories. My maintenance zone is between 1627 and 2113 claories. We are all different. This is a test that is good to indicate what is ideally needed based on our reaults. Belinda
