I thought I recalled you couldnt take st john after bypass but i might that have confused that with taking it prior to surgery?  Any input? Has anyone experienced irritability issues related to nutritional or vitamin deficiencies or over usesage?  I am having serious irritability spells unprovoked which is so totally not like me.   My thyroid levels have stayed fine since stopping synthroid months ago so thats out.  I heard vit d overdose could do that which could be possible.  Any input?  Other thoughts

Do not take St johns wort if you have thyroid problems. I read and heard that it can mess you up more. So stay away from St Johns Wort.  instead i suggest you getting your vitamin level's checked out to see where your vitamin levels are all at. Have your surgeon check for all your fat solubles - ( A,D,E,K) , B 12, T4, TSH, CBC w/differential, Lipid Profile, SMA- 12 Metabolic Panel, Electrolytes, Liver Runchion Studies, Folate and Vitamin B1 With that said , i went through the same thing and now i have a vitamin deficiency of Vitamin B1.  I am taking Vitamin B1 daily and it does help me with my mood swings and irritability spells. I also was getting very depressed and I didn't know why. I was never a depressed person before surgery OR even after surgery. I was never depressed. I am always happy. Always in a good mood. And I couldn't understand WHY this was happening to me. I couldn't remember things also. My thinking was very foggy. And now by taking vitamin B1 , i am all better. I am able to focus and concentrate a lot better. I do not have anymore mood swings and irritability spells. So I strongly suggest you get your vitamin levels checked out and see if you have a vitamin deficiency. Perhaps it could be vitamin B1. You don't know until you get your vitamin levels checked out. So make sure you get it done. I have alot more enegry as well. Just by taking this little vitamin. lol i am so much happy now. good luck to you hugss Lizzy

If you're experiencing these issue at 1 1/2 years post op, then I'd suggest contacting a medical professional for evaluation. Self medicating on herbal meds may not be the best idea.  If you haven't had a current blood test, have one done. Have those results or the results of a current one you've alread one checked with your doctor.  Stresses in life, hormonal issues post op, would be my primary gueses as to your issues. Many people in life take prescription meds to help ease the problems you mentioned. I'd rely on those meds, as opposed to herbal medications without any medical recommendations. DAVE

Don't take herbal remedies without reviewing it all with a doc...Some herbs can cause you problems aborbing other vitamins or mess up your intestinal flora and a whole slew of other problems. They can help too!  But you have to have really good knowledge of them and how they react in your body.  I didn't recheck it out, but I do recall, St John's Wort being on my Nutrionists list of no -no's. I was having anxiety attacks, racing heart,  forgetfulness, severe menstral irritability, severe muscle cramps and twitching, Feeling ADD/ADHD...Insomnia...arthritis is acting up again...All of these signs of deficiency...Sure enough...I found out I had a magnesium deficiency.  (That was quite a while ago and I can't seem to get it under control)  You might have some sort of deficiency for sure! Maybe not magnesium...but another...Listen to your body and get your labs...Don't wait til other symptoms show up...I waited and ignored my symptoms or dismissed them as random little fits of insanity (Which my hubby thought might be peri-menopause...Might still be!)  After Labs, I found myself in a heap of troubles! Still trying to get these things fixed!  Now I worry I might over do my vitamins (I'm like that)...Amazing how inbalanced things can get if you don't get the right dosages. At least you are aware that something is not right and you're looking for answers... Go talk to your doc...a full set of labs will show you if something is off... Good luck!

Sorry for the edit...had computer trouble in the middle of posting...and it didn't finish...Hope this is complete Did your doctor put you on Slow Fe for low iron?  First, Slow Fe is a time released pill (thus the "slow" in fe)...I don't believe we shouldn't be taking anything time released especially iron.  This is fine for people who have not had RNY, since they still have regular plumbing, including a stomach complete with stomach acid and with small intestines (Where iron salts such as Ferrous sulfate is absorbed!   Slow Fe is ferrous sulfate)You had RNY, you have a pouch with little stomach acid, and your small intestines have been bypassed. On top of that you wash your pouch out with food and liquid very quickly and that Slow Fe is not doing you any good whatsoever. Second, Ferrous sulfate is not well tolerated or absorbed in RNY or DS because not only does any iron need to sit in stomach acid for a long time, but it needs the duodenum (small intestinal part by passed) to be absorbed. Even if it was not a slow release, it would do little to no good...I have researched iron quite intensely because two months ago I was anemic and my doctor put me on iron salts too, which made me QUITE irritable, sick, and in pain. Low iron is a sign of irriability and the iron you are taking is never going to help you...You also need to take iron with Vitamin C as ascorbic acid as it helps with absorption.  You will be so much better off finding a chewable or liquid iron with Vit C.  I took two different kinds and am still working on raising my iron levels, but I am not anemic any longer.  I used Tender Iron chewable (carbonyl)  325 mg , which is non-toxic in high doses and Iron as amino acid chelate (chewable) and also non-toxic. 108 mg with Vit C.  Zinc also helps with bringing red blood cells back up ...so I take zinc too and copper (zinc depletes copper)  If you want to talk more PM me...I might have gotten lucky...but I doubt it...I think my research paid off.  I'm glad I didn't take the iron the doc prescribed.

I've been reading a bit about depression/anxiety and vitamin deficiencies. A lot of studies seem to indicate that folic acid deficiencies and depression go hand-in-hand. You might want to add a folic acid supplement to your vitamins. There is folic acid in my daily vitamins but I added an extra folic acid supplement at noon and I can tell the difference already after just a few days. Your doctor can do blood tests to check your folic acid levels. Make sure they check it along with your other labs next time you get them checked.
