build up resistance to meds?
Just curious if anyone else has noticed this. I take sleep meds and have since before my wls but it seems like the longer I take them the less they work. My dr doesn't seem to be concerned but I am. Could it be that we build up resistance to these since our surgery or could it just be me? Just thought I would ask for ya'lls experience. For me this applies to over the counter AND prescription.
I think sleep is a HUGE issue for a lot of us. The over-the-counter and Benadryl didn't work for me anymore, so my Doc gave me Ambien. Now it too seems to be losing it's effectiveness. I don't know what to do, can't sleep without drugs and can't function without sleep. My Doc also seems to think it's an age related issue (I'm 55), the older you get, the less you sleep. All I know is that I need sleep!

The malabsoprtion portion of RNY may have something to do with sleep meds not working as well. I take Restoril, and did so some 8-9 years prior to surgery. It doens't work as well with me anymore either. Next time I see my prescribing doc, I'm going to ask for a larger dose or to change to something more effective on RNY patients. Don't know what's the best for us. I'll ask a doc on another forum. DAVE

Thanks for your reply Michele. We're in the same boat with the age thing. My dr said some people just can't sleep and seems to think that's ok. It isn't! I've even had hormone testing to see if it's hormone related. Like you I can't sleep without them and it's very frustrating combining over the counter and prescription meds and still not being able to sleep. I'm going to bring this up at my annual exam next week and if i can go to a higher rx dosage and it works I'll post about it.
