labs

I'm getting ready to go for my 18-month labs.  How do I know what I need to have done?  Do I basically just get what I have been getting during my 3-6 and 12 month checkup?  Can I just order what labs I feel I need to have done, or should my doctors office just know what labs a WLS patient requires?  Thanks for you help!

I had to stop using my surgeon because I am in the miltary health care system. I need aproval to see my surgeon.  I can only use my clinic. My GP has NO clue what to do with me...So I have been forced to know what tests i need run...what the tests mean.  What remedies to fix deficiencies...What forms of vitamins I can and can't absorb...My doc is only my liason between what tests I want run and what the results could mean.  I research each test anyway, no matter what she tells me. I take care of myself.  I have to...My doc never called me to let me know that I am no longer anemic. (but still iron deficient)  She has no idea I went in two weeks ago and got a copy of my test results or that I never took the WRONG iron she prescribed for me and that I took what i thought was best for me...and it worked...It makes me quite angry. She still has not adressed my magnesium deficiency or my high parathyroid test. So I have been trying to fix a magnesium deficiency on my own too...  It's good to have your own plan and research things for yourself.  I will send you a copy of the tests I request from my doctor in a PM.  It's been posted a few times...but I don't have the links...I gothe list from Tiger Angie and one from Vitalady...It's a combo of both. I think many people have used this list....It's quite thorough!  Lot's of test tubes!   Good luck

Wow!!  I know the last time I went for the blood, the nurse couldn't believe all the tests I was having done.  I had a list from my surgeon when I went, but for some reason, I was thinking that maybe there was more that should be done now that I am much further out.  I'm hoping I can just give them a copy of the list and they'll take everything!!  I'll have to let you know.  Thanks again!

LOL...I know the list looks intimidating...but I honestly don't think I would have known I was as sick as I was with deficiencies if I had not asked for all these tests.  I will demand these tests yearly...I'll pay for them myself if I have to...But honestly, my doc was so happy to have a list she just ran them all.  Get a copy of the results after your have them ran....It's good to have a baseline of numbers so you can keep an eye on your health!  Good luck!  Anita

I just had my 2 year labs done, and a 12 fast was required. CBC, Albumin, Calcium, Creatinine, Electrolytes, Lipid Panel (cholesterol), gluocose (fasting), Iron and TIBC, Ferritin, Folate, Paranthyroid Hormone (PTH), Thimaine Blood (B1), Vitamins B12, and Vitamin D were done on these labs. It took something like 7 or 8 vials of blood when drawn.  Everything came out very good, except D, which I have a history of low normal. I posted my results on my profile page to let others know how well the liquid vitamins I take are working.  DAVE

I also use the list Anita got from Vitalady and Tiger Angie.......my new PCP was shocked I wanted/needed all of that done but he was receptive to what I wanted thanfully.  I would of found someone else to run them if he hadn't been willing to. A word of caution, make sure whoever draws your labs knows what they are doing....some of the test require the blood to be frozen, B-6, B-1 and Vitamin D for sure.  My docs office drew my blood he first time (7 vials) only to have to go to a lab 4 days later because the blood wasn't stored correctly (9 vials) and then they didn't run my D so back for more blood drawn and I still haven't figured out why they needed 3 vials to run my D.  Thankfully I am not scared of needles, lol. Good luck, you are your best advocate tell your doc what you want and be sure to get copies of your lab for tracking.  Most doctors do not get concerned until there is a deficiency, when you track your own labs you can see the downward trends and change your vitamins to prevent deficiencies in many instances.

I guess I am really lucky in the doctor department. My regular MD has stated that she does not know enough about what I need and defers all my blood work to my surgeon. She gets copies but all vitamin scripts and shots go to him
