I know we have to take B12 forever. But can we take a B complex to get the other B we need? Does it do any good for us to take this pill?

yes, but you should take b-1 along with the additional b-12 and b complex. We need those b's!

I was told by my MD and nut that taking B12 by mouth would be fruitless as we cannot absorb B12 that way any longer.  I was told that we have to take B12 either sub lingual daily or an injection monthly.  Hope this helps!  : )

RNYers have to get their B12 from either an injection or sublingually.  We cannot absorb it in oral form because the B12 must bind to a carrier protein called intrinsic factor (IF).  IF is secreted in the portion of the stomach that has been bypassed in RNY.

I use a liquid vitamin with high levels of B12. Just had my labs read yesterday for my two year date. B12 was 584 with the liquid vitamins only. No sub q nor any shots of B12 either. Normal is 200-910.   B1 level was 192, normal range is 87-280. Liquid vitamin I use is noted on my profile page. DAVE

While 584 is normal...it's not the most ideal for RNYers or DSers...out levels can bottom out within 6 months.   You might want to ask your doctor about it (obviously OH is not the place to get medical advice) but for us the higher end of normal is best. Scott

I just had all of my lab results reviewed on a consult with my doctor on Tuesday this week.  I agree OH is not the place for medical advice.  On previous lab tests, I had score as high as 1518 on daily sublingual, and 972 on 3x weekly doses, which my doctor said was too high. This is not my gp either, but one of the doctors that does daily reviews of lab results of RNY patients in my insurance program, Kaiser of southern CA. DAVE

I was put on B12 sublinguals AND a B complex from day 1 post-op by the nutritionist/surgeons at our hospital center. A B1 deficiency can be very dangerous (malnutrition, heart attack, strokes, etc).  I know a few who've gone through that all because they weren't put on a B complex. So, it is a good idea but of course... check with your doctor/nut. Kathy

Hi Kathy,  How frequently do you take your B1 and B12?  I'm on B12 twice weekly and B1 once weekly.   Jenn
