Need your thoughts.....(long)

First off, I have a doc appointment tomorrow as this isn't an ASAP situation. Second, I know ya'll aren't MD certified but I just want some thoughts to see if any one else out there has dealt with this: Last Sept. my BP drop VERY low (70's/40's), was in and out of the ER and Hospital.  SEVERAL tests. One was my thyroid and I have 7 cysts.  Ok, so that had to be put on the back burner until my BP returned to norm...now it is.  NOW, I am having what I believe hormonal issues and "think" it may be from the thyroid.  SO, tomorrow I am in search with my Doc to see. My history of thyroid is that 5 years ago I just had one that they are keeping an eye on.  But then last fall it shows 7, one of "considerable" size.  So, anyone else with thyroid cysts? If ya don't want to publisize your story would you PM me?  Did this cause emotional imbalance from time to time? I am going to WebMD/Google it also, but I wanted to see if "real" peeps that I trust had any insight! Thanks!

Hi Sandra... My issues with thyroid started over a year ago.  I started gaining weight, freezing to death, mood swings and falling asleep in the middle of the day.  Not at all like me since my RNY.  I went for a checkup with my PCP and she said everything looked fine, that my TSH levels were a little low, indicating hyperthyroid while I was complaining of hypothyroid.  At my female checkup a few months later my TSH levels had dropped even more yet I was feeling worse.  I went to my endocrinologist who had been watching my cysts (like you) and he sent me for a scan.  Turns out my thyroid was covered in cysts and some were active and some were not.  So my brain quit producing hormone because it thought my thyroid was overactive while only the cysts were.  Because some were cold, they opted to remove the thyroid. (pre-cancerous)  I had that done in September and it has been a long road.  I'm finally beginning to feel normal.  (It can take from a year to two for some to get back to normal)  Not so sleepy and cold and my weight has stopped climbing.  Wish the weight would go back down but not yet.  I did deal with a lot of brain fog, hair loss, forgetfulness, sleepiness and the such.  My advice is to research all of your options after the doc advises you.  I wish I had researched more.  I had no clue how many body functions the thyroid controls.  I probably would have still opted for removal but I would've understood the outcome a little better. My TSH levels are actually pretty good right now but I am having some issues (seizures) that aren't related to the thyroid or WLS so I'm not a good example of how things can turn out.  But I can tell you to research.  There are so many things that can be done and several different options if it turns out your cysts are starting to cause issues.  You will find a range of opinions from its only an iodine deficiency to removal is the only option.  Remember that opinions are just that, opinions.  Find a specialist or doc you trust and hang in there.   Blessings, Peggy

In 04 I went to the doctor and he found a few cysts on my thyroid he said we could keep an eye on it for 3 months or have it removed.  I had a biopsy done and decided to have the surgery.  I Had half my thyroid removed and the test came back goiter. I don't need to take any meds because the dr left the peri thyroid ( or I would have needed the meds)  Call me odd but alot of my decision was because of my mom and dad ( who have passed ) you can read this if you want to IT FINALLY HAPPENED I am chargeit2him there. I was on the fence about believing if "they are with us" until I went to a seminar w/John Edward .  Ok , enough of that....I have to say that it was after my thyroid surgery that I really decided to look into getting the wls. I had never been in for any type of surgery before and was terrified of not waking up. So I figured if I made it through the thyroid surgery I could make it through the WLS. So Sept 05 I had my RNY....I'm glad I did ! Sandy

Sandy - I too have thyoid issues - in addition to your PCP, you might want to also see an endocrinologist for more "specialized" attention to your thyroid. I have Hashimotos disease and have had 1/2 of my thyroid removed (in 1995). After my RNY (2003) i have had my synthyroid medication lowered 5 times - it causes an emotional imbalance as well as some weight gain - at least is has for me. wishing you the best at your appointment.

Thanks!  My sister has Hashimotos. My PCP ran all the normal tests for thyroid and we'll go from there......just getting tired of all the tests say normal but I have cysts that keep a coming!  And symptoms that linger.
