Hello Everyone,
I posted a few weeks ago about issues that I have been having with my iron.  I went back to the doctor last Friday and they called me today and informed me that my iron count has dropped even lower since my last labs less than a month ago.  I have been taking prescription iron for almost a month and still my levels have dropped.  I am being referred to a hemalogist for iron infusions.  If you have had to have this done would you PLEASE share your experience with me?  I am very scared and nervous as I have heard that this procedure hurts pretty bad.  I have not regained any strength at all.  I am asking that everyone please keep me in your prayers.

Hugs,
Rhonda

I had iron infusions twice and it didn't hurt at all. It really did help boost my iron levels and energy.

They just hook you up to a IV and it took like I can't remember if it was a hour or two (they have to do it slowly) It was nothing at all. It will help you feel better.

Good luck and I will keep you in my prayers.

Rhonda I have had them most of my life. After WLS I did get to my lowest, first yr low and took script then following yr drop so low my numbers were unreadable -0  so back to IV Infusions. My second one after WLS was Feb. 07 and I have been doing good since. I am not taking any supplement I get all my iron from the foods I eat and I actually for first time in my life had my iron reverse and start to go back up a few  months ago... Please don't be afraid of the infusions they do not hurt I have been getting them since I was very young and I don't remember it hurting then either. I hate needles but I give myself 2 B12's a week. Thats the worse part is a little stick. You will probably die from the boredom as it takes some hours to get all the treatments in...I did 2 each week for 3 weeks my last set. Bring a good book and enjoy the alone time.  If you go to an oncologist/hematologist they usually do them right in their office where they do chemo. You will feel so much better I promise you.

Current weight:120 and still 5'4

Rhonda, I'm so sorry your iron is not working...I was facing infusions and transfusions too! I was on a two month supplement period to try to raise my red blood counts and my iron and ferritin...and I have! I refused to use the prescription Ferrous Sulfate my doc gave me...The side effects and track record were not good! It made me feel aweful sick and constipated.  (Of course my doc went on vacation for a month so she still doesn't know that I threw her iron on my lawn instead of taking it!  But I think she's gonna be happy for me!)   So I  did my own research on the different iron available and what WL surgeons are recommending, what irons are less toxic, more absorbable, and on and on...I read anemia boards, doctor reports, case studies, statistics...You name it!  I found the iron I wanted to try...and figured out my own dosage and the results blew me over!  I got results today after two scary crazy months of waiting and hoping... I have to get my iron up some more, but I am climbing so fast out of danger! I am so thrilled!   I am going to post my own thread with my results... I used carbonyl Iron that I ordered thru Vitalady...It's chewable and IT IS ABSORBABLE! I am beside myself with joy!  I cannot even begin to tell you how sorry and how much I totally understand your fear...I wish you much luck!  I hope you feel well soon. What kind of Iron are you taking if you don't mind me asking? Hugs, Anita

Rhonda, You should really try Tender Iron from vitalady.com  It really works for me.  I take 6 every morning with Vit C and nothing else for 2 hours.  I also chew them and they taste good.

Hi Rhonda,

I have been on iron infusions for a month now. I go for an infusion once weekly. They hook you up to an IV and run the iron through the IV. The only pain is the initial stick. The treatment lasts about 40 minutes. They have rooms with TV's so it's not so bad.  I feel a little better. I will probably have to have the infusons for a total of three months.
